Episodio 10: Prom (Baile de preparatoria)
Some girls in high school dream about going to prom, but that wasn’t me.
I always expected to go to prom, but I didn’t start seriously thinking about it until my junior year.
I was in a history class, talking to some of my friends about prom dresses.
And that’s when we realized… we weren’t going to have our proms together; there were two different proms.
The Black students went to one prom, and the white students went to another one.
It was the first time we really thought about that.
But my friends and I decided we were not going to do that.
So, I went home and talked to my mom.
She said, “If you want to have prom with all your friends, that’s fine.
But you need to be prepared for consequences.” I was very determined, though.
I said, “We are going to have prom together!”

We went to football games together.
We played sports together.
We ate together.
We had pajama parties together.
If we could do all those things together, then why couldn’t we have prom together too?
There are some towns in the United States that still have a lot of racial division.
In some places, white people live on one side of the town and Black people live on the other side.
And it’s sad, but that’s just the terrible reality.
We started a prom committee.
It was twelve people — both Black students and white students.
Our goal was to have prom together.
We had our first meeting at school.
And we discussed the things we had to do.
We needed to decide the theme of the prom and how much tickets were going to cost.
I made a Facebook page about prom for my classmates.
It had information about the prom committee and where to buy tickets.
But then one day, this guy — a total stranger — contacted me.
He said he was a social media expert, and he wanted to help.
He saw our Facebook page, and he wanted to make it go viral.
But then the next day, early in the morning, my mom said, “Wow, so many people have looked at the Facebook page for your prom!” And I said, “What are you talking about, Mom?” But when I looked at the page, I realized there were a lot of new comments from strangers asking, “How do we donate? We want to help you have a prom.”
A woman who owned a shop in the state of Louisiana sent us some masks and beaded necklaces, like people have during Carnival celebrations.
Two photographers also agreed to take photos for us for free.
And someone even donated dresses for the girls on the prom committee, so we didn’t have to pay for our dresses.
Some people didn’t want to change the “tradition.” But it was really about racism.
They called it a “tradition,” but in reality, some white parents just didn’t want their kids to have a prom with Black kids.
It was hard.
Some of my friends’ cars were damaged, and some people were super mean.
It was terrible.
At least 50 of my classmates — half the senior class — agreed to attend the integrated prom.
A lot of people at our high school were pretty nervous, but we knew we were doing the right thing.
I wore shiny silver shoes and a tight red dress to the prom.
My mom styled my hair that day.
She curled it.
I looked super cute.
All of the prom committee arrived in a limousine.
In the limo, we took photos together and posted them to social media.
We felt super fancy.
We were like, “Hey! Look at us!” When we arrived, there was a red carpet and people taking photos.
Inside, there was a dance floor and a DJ for music.
I wasn’t nominated for any awards.
but honestly, for me, organizing the prom was the best award.
After we worked so hard, it felt good to just dance and not worry about anything! My friends and I were so happy to be at our prom together.
When the DJ played a Rihanna song, everyone started dancing in a big circle.
The morning after prom, we had a huge breakfast.
Everyone sat at a table together, and I ate so much food.
I remember thinking, “This is great.
I want this moment to last forever.”
We all want to make positive change in the world.
But if we wait for somebody else to do it, then nothing will ever happen! sit and wait for somebody else.
Because it only takes one person to make a big change.
I graduated from high school in 2020.
There were only thirty-five people in my class, and it was the biggest class in my school! Unalaska is an island, so we’re basically isolated from the rest of the world.
Everybody knows everybody in our city.
At first, I was going to go to prom in a suit, but my friends said, “You should wear a dress, just for fun.” And I thought, “That’s a pretty good idea!” So instead of going in a traditional suit, I was the first person to ever wear drag to my prom.
The first time I watched “Drag Race,” I was in my room at home.
I saw all of these beautiful drag queens, and I thought, “Woah! I can do this one day.” I was so amazed by all of the different styles and makeup.
So I saw “Drag Race” for the first time.
And then, during my fourteenth birthday party, I put the show on for my friends, and they were amazed too.
So, we all started watching “Drag Race” all the time.
She asked me if I knew about a drag queen named Alaska who won a competition on “Drag Race.” And I said, “Yes! I Alaska!” I had no words.
I was so excited.
When I met Alaska, it was amazing.
We talked a lot about Alaska’s drag experience.
But we also talked about my life and what I planned to wear to prom.
And after that conversation, I knew that I had to go to prom in drag.
I couldn’t just change my mind and wear a simple suit.
No, that’s not me.
If I say I’m going to do something, then I do it.
It takes a long time for packages to get to Unalaska.
I wanted to have time to return things if they didn’t fit, so I had to order everything months before prom! I ordered a black cocktail dress, a pair of high heels, and a black wig that was brown on the ends.
One day, we were at the local community center, and my friend said, “Gilmar, you should do it right now!” She told me to use the intercom to make an announcement to everyone.
Gilmar estaba nervioso.
So, I made an announcement.
I said, “This is Gilmar Tapaoan.
Delaney, will you go to prom with me?” She was standing right next to me, and she replied, “Yes, of course!”
Just getting ready for prom was so exciting.
I took a shower and I danced in my room.
I felt amazing because I was going to be “Glimmer” for the first time.
I went to my friend Delaney’s house.
I got dressed and then she put on my makeup.
She wouldn’t let me look in the mirror until she was done.
She said, “I don’t want you to look at yourself until your makeup is done.
Then, you’ll see how beautiful you look.
Even though you’re already beautiful.” I was stressed and I said, “What do I look like?! Show me!”
Wow, I looked ! I remember that feeling.
And it was the best.
Before we went to prom, we went to see my family at my house.
They all said, “Whoa!” And they were all a little shocked.
When we arrived, there was a red carpet.
Delaney and I walked down the carpet and everyone was looking at us.
We waved at everyone, and then we went to the stage.
Everyone screamed and shouted my name.
I will never forget that moment.
Y este fue su debut.
It was my first time wearing drag, and I loved it.
Some people said, “You look so beautiful, .” And at first, I wanted to tell them, “Tonight, I’m not Gilmar.
I’m .” But then I said to myself, “Don’t worry about it now.
For tonight, at least, Gilmar and Glimmer are the same thing.”
