Episodio 15: Inspiring Images (Imágenes que inspiran)

Duolingo English for Spanish Speakers Podcast

Es posible que hayas visto esa imagen antes: una mujer con un pañuelo rojo atado en la cabeza y una camisa azul remangada, con el brazo doblado y puño en alto, junto con el lema “Podemos Hacerlo”, o “We Can Do It!”.

Es Rosie the Riveter, Rosie la remachadora.

People usually call this image “Rosie the Riveter.” It was created during the Second World War.

And for several decades, it has been a feminist symbol.

For six years, I searched art galleries, museums, libraries, and archives.

I was looking for the original photo of the woman who inspired Rosie the Riveter.

I wasn’t sure if I could find the photo, but I knew that I couldn’t stop looking.

I saw it on my friends’ bedroom walls, on blogs — everywhere.

But I didn’t know much about it — just that it was very old and very famous…

The U.S.

government wanted its citizens to have a positive opinion of the war, so they created propaganda.

I thought that was the reason for the Rosie the Riveter poster — to inspire women to start working and help their country win the war.

I was very surprised.

I learned that the poster was not created by the U.S.

government.

And it wasn’t originally called “Rosie the Riveter.” In fact, it only appeared in the factories of a company called Westinghouse for two weeks in 1943, and then it was forgotten for 40 years.

There is a similar image from Westinghouse showing a man holding up his fist — just like Rosie.

When I saw that image, I realized that the poster of Rosie wasn’t created to inspire women.

The real message was: “We are Westinghouse and together we are powerful.” So, it’s not really a feminist image.

In the 1980s, a woman named Geraldine Hoff Doyle saw that photograph in a magazine, and she thought it looked like her.

Geraldine started telling people that she was the inspiration for Rosie the Riveter! But the photograph didn’t include a name or any information.

Geraldine just thought it was her.

So, I started to wonder: How do we know that Geraldine was the real inspiration for Rosie the Riveter?

I needed to find the original photograph because it might have more information about who the woman really was.

I went to as many different archives and museums as possible.

I looked through so many magazines and newspapers, page by page.

Finding the photo seemed impossible.

It was a needle in a haystack.

While I was on the phone, I found it! The photo was in the New York Times Magazine in June 1942.

It was like seeing a saint, or the Virgin Mary.

After I looked for the photo for years, it was suddenly there.

I still didn’t know who the woman was.

But it was not Geraldine.

Geraldine worked in the state of Michigan during the war — not in California.

So it definitely wasn’t her.

But now I had to find out who it was.

On the back of the original photograph, it said, “pretty Naomi Parker.” It was such an exciting moment! After five years of searching, I found the name of the woman in the photograph.

Finally, I had a reward for working so hard and never giving up.

Pero resultó que ella no oía bien, she was hard of hearing.

When I called her, she couldn’t understand me.

She said she was hard of hearing.

I told her I wanted to talk about her work during the war, but she still couldn’t hear me.

And after a while, she hung up the phone.

I brought flowers to Naomi and her sister, and they were so excited.

They both wore nice clothes and make-up.

It was clear that our meeting was important to them.

Naomi wasn’t feeling well, but she really wanted to tell me her story.

The world thought that the woman in the photograph was someone else, so Naomi was really happy to finally have her identity back.

Images have a lot of power and can change the way people think.

Rosie the Riveter positively affected a lot of people around the world — especially women.

I thought it was so important to find the real identity of Rosie because her image was an important part of U.S.

history.

The job paid a lot of money.

I just had to pass a physical exam.

I worked out for several hours a day and participated in martial arts competitions all the time, so it seemed easy.

But during the exam, the doctor said my blood pressure was extremely high.

Finally, it was time for my appointment.

When I walked through the door, the doctor immediately did some tests.

And after a few hours, she came back into the exam room.

She told me to sit down and she said, “Ryan, there’s a problem with both of your kidneys.” I didn’t understand.

I was 27 years old and very healthy.

My mom offered to give me one of her kidneys many times.

But I decided to wait for a deceased donor.

I was young.

I thought I would be okay.

But I was getting weaker and weaker.

Most days, I couldn’t get off the couch.

So after more than a year, I finally agreed to let my mom help me.

But first, she had to get tested to see if she was a match.

La mamá de Ryan… era compatible, she was a match!

I was so grateful to my mom.

She gave me a second chance.

But after the surgery, I had to change the way I lived.

I needed a job that wasn’t physically difficult and that’s why I started teaching.

I became a shop teacher at a local high school and I fell in love with the job.

When I was at my gym one day, I saw an advertisement.

A woman was looking for someone to work out with her.

Her name was Shakina.

We met as friends and started working out together all the time.

We had an instant connection, and we started a relationship pretty quickly.

But a month after we tied the knot, I noticed something was wrong.

I went to the doctor and found out that there was a problem with the kidney transplant from my mom.

It was only functioning at 3%.

I could only receive a transplant from donors with a specific type of blood: O negative.

And that type is very rare.

Finding a match was going to be difficult.

The doctors told me it could take up to eight years, and I didn’t have that much time.

She didn’t want to leave.

She wanted to take care of me.

But I said, “I’m going to be okay.

Go see your family.”

Shakina immediately called me back.

She had a suggestion, what if we rented signs in our city to ask for a donor? It was such a crazy idea.

I didn’t want to ask strangers for a kidney.

But I didn’t have any other options.

Shakina told me that she was going to do it because it was a life or death situation.

One day later, the signs were up.

There were 27 in total! In the airport, on major roads, and at bus stops.

The sign said, “Ryan McLennan needs a living kidney donor.

Blood type O.” And there was a photo of me, my wife, and our dog Athena.

There was also a phone number and a link to a Facebook page.

We got more than 150 calls from people who wanted to donate their kidneys! It was unbelievable!

I started to feel frustrated.

So many people called us, but no one was a match.

Until Tony.

I was in my classroom when I learned that Tony was a match, and he was ready to donate his kidney.

I couldn’t believe it! It was like finding a needle in a haystack.

I was amazed that a complete stranger wanted to help me.

I was in shock.

I needed to meet him!

Ryan inmediatamente llamó a Tony y le propuso reunirse.

We had an instant connection.

We chatted about our lives for hours.

He was so kind and it was easy to talk to him.

He didn’t talk about the transplant.

He just said that if he ever needed a transplant, then he would want someone to help him too.

It was that simple for Tony.

I’ll never forget that moment.

Tony had a big smile on his face and said, “Hey, it’s strange to see you here!” We were getting ready to have surgery, but it was like we were seeing each other at a bar.

I remember giving him a big hug.

I was so nervous about the surgery, but after I saw Tony, I stopped worrying.

I won the lottery! I felt weak for a long time, but now I feel so alive and healthy.

And it’s all because of Tony.

We play cards and tennis together every week, and we even went on a trip to California together after the surgery.

My wife had the idea to make those signs, and that’s why I’m alive today.

I got another chance to live, but I also made a lifelong friend.
