Episodio 16: The Power of Protest (El poder de la protesta)

I really wanted to do something about climate change.

So, I organized a march across Vermont.

At first, it was just me and a few friends.

But by the time we arrived in the city of Burlington, there were about 1,000 people marching.

That’s a big crowd for Vermont!

When you organize a protest, you always wonder: “Will anyone come? Will we have to march alone?” If no one comes, it can seem like no one cares about the cause.

Well, enough people came to our protest.

It was very successful.

A thousand people was the biggest climate protest in U.S.

history? It was very depressing to read that! I realized that we needed to do a lot more to stop climate change.

We needed to demand that our politicians change laws.

And so, after that march, we decided that it was time to build a movement.

The first protest I ever saw was in 1971, against the Vietnam War.

I lived in the town of Lexington, in the state of Massachusetts.

A group of Vietnam War veterans wanted to protest, so they asked permission to camp in the park in Lexington.

But the town leaders said, “No!” And so 500 people from Lexington, including my very gentle and polite father, joined the protestors.

They were arrested in the park that night.

After that day, I understood that patriotism and protesting against the government could be the same thing.

I was reading about climate change while writing the book.

And I realized: this is the most important story in the world.

At that time, the idea of climate change was new.

But it was clear that our planet was in trouble and we needed to take action.

So, from the beginning, I was both a journalist and an advocate.

A lot of people were sick with dengue fever, a virus caused by mosquitoes.

Because of climate change, the world was becoming warmer and mosquitoes were appearing in new places.

On that trip, I visited clinics full of people who were dying.

It was so unfair.

Climate change was hurting so many people.

I knew it was time to do more than just write.

The fossil fuel industry was so powerful that it was able to stop action on climate change.

But we needed the government to put restrictions on the fossil fuel industry! So, we had to build a movement to change the way that people think about the world.

We decided to do that by going out into the streets, where people could see us.

We called our organization 350 to remember something very important: The amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere needs to be a lot lower.

Otherwise, humans will not be able to live on the Earth.

I knew that nothing would change at that climate summit.

There wasn’t a big movement yet, so politicians weren’t trying to stop climate change.

But we had to start somewhere.

We organized over 5,000 protests in 181 countries! That was the beginning of global activism for climate change.

I felt so optimistic!

By 2014, scientists realized that the effects of climate change were much worse than they predicted.

And we didn’t have much time to change this.

We wanted to make our movement so big that politicians couldn’t ignore climate change anymore.

So, we asked everybody to come to a big march in New York.

You never know how many people will come to a march.

If only 30 or 40 thousand people come, it looks very small.

And it seems like not many people care about climate change.

We thought we needed at least 100,000 people to make the world pay attention.

Cien mil personas.

More than 1,000 groups helped organize the march.

Many of them were small, like churches and synagogues.

And on the day of the march, it all went very well.

We walked from Central Park to Times Square, right in the center of New York City.

So many people came! We had a huge crowd of around 400,000 people.

There were students, parents and their children, older people.

People of all backgrounds and religions.

At that time, it was the biggest march for climate change ever.

And one of the biggest protests in U.S.

history! We had come a long way since that first march in Vermont! I felt so happy about the number of the people who showed up.

In his speech, he said: “Our citizens keep marching.

We cannot pretend we do not hear them.

We have to answer the call.”

We still have to work faster to slow climate change.

But now, finally, there are political leaders who are trying to help.

We will continue protesting to make them work faster, but at least we have the world’s attention now.

To this day, I haven’t watched the whole video.

I only watched about six minutes of it, and it made me feel sick.

The whole time I was watching the video, I knew I had to do something.

I was angry.

I was disgusted.

I wasn’t sure what I could do, but I just knew I had to do something.

I kept asking myself: “What should I do?” My wife said I should organize a protest, but I had no idea how to do that.

Most people in Harvard are white.

There’s a small Mexican population, but me and my kids are literally the only Black people in the town.

And there is a history of racism toward Black people in Harvard.

The KKK used to be here.

There’s evidence that the KKK was active in the state of Nebraska until the 1960s.

There are so many different cultures and people of different races in San Diego.

I’ve met Ethiopians, Samoans, Asians, Pacific Islanders, Mexicans, and Cubans there.

Racism exists there, but you don’t think about it as often.

So, for me, San Diego feels very different from a small town like Harvard.

I stayed in Harvard because of my wife and her family.

I liked the way the people in her family cared about each other.

Family was everything to them, and I really wanted to be a part of that.

In that part of Harvard, there was no sidewalk.

I thought it was too dangerous to walk in the middle of the road.

I was with my daughter at the time, so I walked pretty close to someone’s yard.

The guy in the house shouted at me to get off his grass, and he called me the N-word.

Things like that were really difficult.

But I wanted to stay in Harvard because I loved my job as a coach and because it was my kids’ home.

Otherwise, I would have left.

To the kids, I was just Coach G., not a Black man.

Sometimes, they invited me to meet their parents.

And that made people change their minds.

In my experience, white communities often negatively stereotype Black people.

But as a football coach, I got to speak to people in my community, and they saw that the stereotypes were wrong.

Police violence has been happening for a very long time — long before people could easily record it on their phones.

As Black people, we’ve tried to get others to pay attention to this for years.

But it felt like no one would listen.

I didn’t use social media — no Facebook, nothing.

I thought, “How can I organize this protest if I only have a phone and 50 contacts?”

So I called David Reazola who is somebody I used to coach.

He was really upset about George Floyd too.

I told him that I wanted to organize a protest, but I needed his help.

He was really happy to help.

But I still wasn’t sure if anyone was going to come.

I called David that morning, and at 6:40 that evening, we met on the steps of City Hall.

It was just us two.

He wanted to have the protest, even if no one else came.

A las 6:45 aparecieron tres personas más.

A las 6:50, cinco más.

And then, by about 6:58 p.m., everyone started coming.

It was amazing! By 7:00 p.m., there were around 70 to 100 people there.

That’s a lot of people in a small town!

As I said, I’m the only Black person in the city, so it wasn’t a bunch of Black people at this protest.

Some people were really upset about the murder of George Floyd, and others said they had a lot of respect for me and for what I was trying to do.

Either way, it was cool.

The chief of police, Wayne Alley, came to support the protest… In a speech, he denounced police brutality.

Otras sorpresas no fueron tan positivas.

Some administrators at the local public school came to the protest.

These same people didn’t do anything when my daughter experienced racism at the school.

So, when I saw them at the protest, I thought, “Wow.

That’s kind of ironic.”

I talked about the injustice of George Floyd’s death.

I talked about how the police abuse power.

I talked about systemic racism and about my own experiences with it — right here in Nebraska.

And people listened.

When it was time to stand up, David suggested that we all help each other… No one went to help the school administrators, so I helped them myself.

I wanted to be a positive example for the community.

And ultimately, that day was about something bigger.

After the protest, it was clear how some people felt about me.

But ultimately, the protest was a very positive thing.

Everyone heard my message about George Floyd and police violence — even those people who stopped talking to me.

They had to listen to me, and that means that I gave them something important to think about.
