Episodio 45: Life in NYC - Famous Neighborhoods

I was amazed when I watched the loud trucks move big boxes of fresh fruits and vegetables.

And sometimes, when no one was looking, I took a small piece of shrimp from the food stand and put it in my mouth quickly as I walked.

I walked into the shop and greeted the Puerto Rican man at the counter in Spanish.

I said, “Hola, ¡buenas tardes!” And then, to my surprise, he responded in Cantonese! That’s what Chinatown is like.

Most people who live here are from China or have Chinese families, but there is still a mix of cultures and languages.

I loved that this man respected my culture enough to learn a few words of my language.

It was a great place to grow up, but I don’t think I really appreciated the beauty of Chinatown, and how much it affected my life, until I was older.

When you walk around Chinatown, there are so many interesting things to see and eat.

Even though it’s crowded, I see my neighbors all the time.

My mom is super outgoing, so she says hi to everyone she knows — in lots of different Chinese languages, like Cantonese, Toisan, and Mandarin.

Lunar New Year was the only holiday where most kids in Chinatown didn’t go to school.

It’s our most important holiday.

When I was a kid, I loved hearing the drums and watching the celebration in the streets.

I also liked getting money in red envelopes from the adults, which is a Lunar New Year tradition.

We had three bedrooms.

My father had his own room, and my mother, my two brothers, and I slept in another room.

Sometimes, my parents rented the third bedroom for extra money.

Or, if our family from China was visiting, they stayed with us.

So, even though there were five people in my family, there were sometimes ten or twelve people living in our apartment!

People in the neighborhood spoke a lot of different Chinese languages, like Cantonese, Mandarin, and Fuzhounese, so we didn’t always understand each other.

We created our own way of talking, and we often used hand signals.

At home, my brothers and I spoke English to each other.

It was sometimes difficult to talk to our parents because they didn’t understand, so we used a little Cantonese and a little English to communicate with them.

In high school, I began to see that there was a lot more to the world than Chinatown.

Then in college, I met so many new people from different places.

When I went to the grocery store near Columbia, I thought a lot about my childhood.

There was a shop on our street in Chinatown that sold chicken, and while my mother shopped, she left us with the owner.

In my Chinatown, people trusted each other a lot.

At Columbia, the community didn’t feel the same to me.

I taught a lot of Mexican students in Chicago, and I tried to show them that it’s very special to grow up in a home with different cultures.

Sometimes, it’s difficult for children to connect to their family’s culture, but I always taught them to love and appreciate that part of their lives.

Chinatown in Chicago has a different history than Chinatown in New York City.

The community didn’t feel the same to me, and it was less busy.

I also missed the amazing Chinese food I used to eat at home all the time.

At the end of the day, it just wasn’t New York City.

Because of our language differences, my parents and I couldn’t really communicate well on the phone.

My father called me every day, but we only spoke for 30 seconds.

He always asked, “How are you?” and “What did you eat today?” and that was all.

I felt like I couldn’t connect with him.

I was trying to make positive changes for Asian-Americans, but that was hard to explain to my parents.

They didn’t understand my goal, and they didn’t want me to get into trouble.

I think a lot of people who are the children of immigrants in the U.S.

have the same problem.

I realized that I couldn’t connect with my parents unless I went back home.

I felt like this was a way to help the Asian-American community — and all immigrant communities.

I think it’s so important to teach people to be proud of their culture when they’re young, and I felt like my students responded well to this lesson.

That changed my relationship with my family in a huge way.

I practiced speaking and pronouncing words with my parents.

And I was even able to help them study for their test to become U.S.

citizens!

There’s a great sense of community in Chinatown.

People like to take care of each other.

Chinatown really helped me to become the person I am, and I am grateful to my parents for that.

I’m so proud to be both Chinese and a New Yorker.

I love the history of my neighborhood.

When I was growing up in the 1980s, it was considered a dangerous area.

But for the people who lived there, it was a vibrant community of immigrants.

A lot of people grew up in small apartments where several generations of families lived.

Washington Heights is full of energy and life.

When you walk down the street, you’ll see groups of people playing dominoes, or laughing and hanging out on stoops.

Washington Heights is like one big family.

When I was growing up, a lot of kids in the U.S.

got Xboxes for Christmas, but kids from Dominican families got a box of dominoes.

It doesn’t matter how old you are, or if you are a man or a woman — everyone plays dominoes.

I remember playing with my mom, my aunts, or anyone who came to my house.

My mom cared a lot about her community and she took care of our neighborhood.

On my street, she was known as “the numbers lady” because she was in charge of the Dominican lottery every Sunday.

So, everyone always came to her to pick their lottery numbers.

While our neighbors were playing the lottery, they ate big bowls of my mom’s hot mondongo, which is a popular Dominican soup.

So, my mom helped create a special place where people could hang out and enjoy food from their home country.

My family really wanted me to go to the Bronx High School of Science because it was such a good school.

I wasn’t really happy about it because it was far from home, and I didn’t feel like I was the same as the other students.

I had to take three trains to get there, and it took an hour.

And then once I got there, I felt a real culture shock.

People there had a lot of money, and although I grew up with food on the table, I was poor compared to them.

I didn’t realize I was different until I went to that school.

There was a group of girls who took the same train as me every day.

We never talked, but I remember some of them looking at me.

And then one day, one of those girls came up to me and said, “Hey, my friend likes you.” And that’s how I met my future wife, Eileen, when we were 15 years old.

We moved back to Washington Heights.

I knew that I always wanted to be back in the neighborhood where I grew up.

I was at work and I got a phone call from my wife.

She was at the doctor’s office, and they told her that she had a very aggressive form of cancer.

It was a very scary and difficult time for us.

But my wife has always been very brave.

Our mothers helped us so much.

It was a really bad time, but I felt very connected to my family.

My house was so full of love and support, and there were always people playing dominoes.

It felt like a nice break from our difficult life, but I won’t lie, there were definitely times when I thought to myself, “There’s no way I can deal with this.”

Before I found out that my wife had cancer, I never thought about death.

But after I found out, I started to think about everything that really mattered in life, and I started writing about my experiences.

As a kid, I never understood how important Washington Heights was to New York City.

But on my blog, I really wanted to share the history of my neighborhood with the world and keep our culture alive.

Over time, I realized that Washington Heights was changing in a positive and exciting way.

And I really wanted to write about this new energy and help make it even better.

I like to think that I’m like my mother with the Dominican lottery.

She was creating a community and I’m trying to do the same thing with this site.

I want everyone in Washington Heights to know that this is a great neighborhood.

It is a wonderful place to stay and build a family and a community.

A lot of people have come to the U.S.

and made this neighborhood their home.

For many, it was just a temporary stop before moving somewhere else.

But now, I think people are realizing that they don’t need to move.

They can stay here.

This is Washington Heights.
