Episodio 49: The White House (La Casa Blanca)

One of my coworkers came into the kitchen and said, “The First Lady wants to talk about the fettuccine Alfredo you made.

I think you’re in trouble.”

My coworker said, “The President can’t eat fettuccine Alfredo.

He’s on an important diet.

They want to talk to you right now.” So I went out to the dining room.

And everyone in the kitchen was absolutely sure that I was going to be fired.

I also really loved growing up in the state of New Jersey near the ocean.

And when I thought, “What should I do with my life?” I decided to combine the two things I love.

So, I became a chef in the Navy.

I thought I needed more discipline, and I knew being a cook was a hard job.

You have to work many hours in a kitchen every day, cooking and washing dishes.

I also expected people to shout at me all the time because that’s what I saw on TV shows about the U.S.

Army.

My uncle told me, “That’s a terrible decision.

There are too many cooks in the world.” My family didn’t think it was an important job, so they were not happy.

I had to wake up at 4 am, and then I had to work by myself to cook breakfast for 1,800 men and women in the Navy.

I made things like bacon, eggs, and coffee.

It was my responsibility to have food ready on time — and I couldn’t be late.

It was my job to feed everyone.

And when I was finished with breakfast, I had to start preparing the next meal.

When you’re on a ship for three months, you have to make everything.

You can’t just go buy bread.

So I made things like rolls and even birthday cakes.

I could make a lot with very few ingredients.

Everyone thought I was a magician.

After a while, I became a famous chef in the Navy.

But I started to get bored, so I decided to tell my boss.

I thought he was going to be upset, but he asked, “Do you want to work at the White House and cook for the President and his family?” And I said, “Wow! That’s going to be a real challenge!”

I was so excited! It was the most important job a Navy chef could have.

I never thought that someone like me could be a chef at the White House — never!

I had to cook three meals a day for the President, so I needed secret clearance.

They wanted to make sure that I wasn’t going to hurt the President.

And they also needed to trust me if I heard any secret information.

I called my family at home.

They were so excited that they screamed into the phone.

They couldn’t believe that I was going to work in the White House.

I think it was the first time they were really proud of me and my work.

When you work in the White House, you have to be ready for anything.

And every day is very busy.

Hundreds of people come to visit the President daily, and you might suddenly have to cook for a celebrity, or maybe the whole national soccer team.

I had a lot of different responsibilities.

I had to cook for world leaders who were visiting the President, but I also had to clean the dining room between meals.

And I couldn’t just go home at 8 pm every day because at night, I had to make drinks for everyone!

I was with the President all day, so I got to see his regular life.

In the mornings, I prepared and served breakfast, so I saw the President reading his newspaper while his daughter played in the living room.

Sometimes, he even played the piano! Then, in the evenings, I sometimes had to prepare a snack for him when he was working on important business.

The Clintons loved me because I always had fun while I was working.

I often cut fruits and vegetables to look like little animals, and then I decorated their meals with them.

I loved doing creative things like that.

And sometimes, the President came into the kitchen and we watched TV together for an hour.

Someone gave me a very long list of all the things the president could and could not eat.

He could only eat healthy things, and it was my job to make everything taste good.

So, if I used an ingredient like tofu, it needed to be delicious.

The President needed to have a healthy diet because he had such a stressful job.

At the time, I also had a rule: Do not tell the President the ingredients of the food I make.

For example, if I made a cheesecake, I couldn’t tell him that I made it with tofu because he might think it was disgusting.

Fettuccine Alfredo sauce usually has milk, cheese, and butter, which were three things the President couldn’t eat.

So, I wanted to make a healthy version, but it still had to look and taste good!

The First Lady said she was confused because the dish had many ingredients the President shouldn’t eat.

I just explained that there wasn’t any milk in the sauce and the cheese was made of soy.

Those were all things that the President was allowed to eat.

I went back to the kitchen, and all the kitchen staff were there.

They couldn’t believe that I wasn’t fired.

After that dinner, the President and the First Lady trusted my cooking completely.

And I became one of the world’s greatest food magicians.

I’ll always be a chef, making magic in the kitchen.

No matter what, cooking will always be my passion.

It all started because there was a school trip to Washington D.C., the capital city of the U.S.

My daughter, Helen, wanted to go.

But I realized that we could go on our own trip.

It was cheaper, and we could see a lot more things in the city.

So instead of going with her school, we decided to make it her birthday present — a trip to D.C., just me and her.

I wanted her to see how our government works and show her that there are real people who go to work in Washington D.C.

every day and make laws for our country.

We had to apply to go to the White House because there was a big event happening there, called the White House Easter Egg Roll.

It is very popular, and you can only go if you have tickets.

The Easter Egg Roll is an interesting tradition.

It doesn’t happen anywhere else in the world.

In front of the White House, kids use sticks to push wooden eggs down a hill.

It’s a really big event, and thousands of people come every year.

I really wanted to take Helen to the Easter Egg Roll.

It sounded so interesting, and it was a great opportunity to see the White House.

Helen was pretty disappointed.

So, I decided to contact our local government representative, and we were able to schedule a tour of Congress.

It wasn’t the Easter Egg Roll, but I thought it was pretty cool.

We did see the White House later, even though it was behind a gate.

We also went to the Smithsonian Museum and visited a lot of famous monuments.

It was a really incredible experience.

We saw the representative’s office and the cafeteria where everyone eats lunch.

Then, we went to see a meeting of Congress, where they were voting on different issues.

It was really cool that we could go in and see our representatives at work.

Our tour guide asked to talk to us at the end of the tour.

Then, he offered us tickets for the White House Egg Roll! Of course, we said yes.

Helen was confused because she thought we already saw the White House.

Usually, tourists can only see it through a super tall gate.

I told her, “Yes, we did, but now we get to go inside the gate!” And she was super excited.

We had to be there very early because there was a lot of security.

I felt like we were at the airport because we had to wait in a very long line to walk through metal detectors.

We also weren’t allowed to bring any bags with us.

Hello everybody!

It was like a party in front of the White House.

Hundreds of kids were running around, and there were balloons everywhere.

There was also someone dressed like a giant rabbit for Easter.

Music was playing and there were lots of different activities, like face painting, games, and interesting animals to look at.

Helen thought it was really cool.

...that’s Malia.

Helen couldn’t believe it.

They were kids just like her, but they lived in the White House and their dad was the President of the country! That’s one of the things that I wanted my daughter to understand.

That ultimately, the people in the government are just like you and me.

It’s easy to forget that real people work at the White House every day, and it’s not only a place from a movie — it’s real!
