Episodio 50: Bike Adventures (Aventuras en bicicleta)

I needed to get up the mountain but I couldn’t go up with the bike trailer while Max was inside because it was too heavy.

So, he always had to get out and run on the road with me.

On that day, my body was sore and I was exhausted.

The wind was also really strong, so cycling was hard, and I was very slow.

My dog was faster than me! And then the wind became so strong that it blew me off the bike.

I was sitting on the side of the road.

My bike was lying beside me, and my knee was bleeding.

I didn’t feel confident anymore.

I didn’t know what I was doing.

The only reason I didn’t start crying was because I looked at Max.

He was looking at me.

It was like he was thinking, “Dude, we’re doing this together.

Stop complaining.” So instead, I got back on my bike and slowly, we went over that mountain.

But I knew there was more to come…

I lived abroad for most of my adult life.

I spent a lot of time in Europe and Africa.

Then I moved to Mexico.

Mexico City is a wonderful place, but I started to get tired of living in a big city.

After 17 years, I missed being at home, being near my family, and just being in the United States.

I knew that it was time to come home.

I didn’t know what to do for my 50th birthday.

Then late one night, I had an idea.

I thought, “Wait a minute.

The U.S.

has 50 states, I’m turning 50… That’s it!” I decided to celebrate my 50th birthday by riding my bike across all 50 states.

Enseguida, comenzó a planearlo.

My friends thought it was a crazy idea.

I spent hours at my desk, studying maps of the United States to plan my trip.

I wanted to make sure that I went to each state while the weather was good.

I didn’t want to be in a northern state like Minnesota in winter when it’s really cold, or in a southern state like Arizona in summer when it’s extremely hot.

My birthday was in October, so I decided to start in the city of San Diego in California and ride across the Southern U.S.

first.

Then I planned to travel back to California, and finally, I was going to travel to the East Coast again.

Max and I were together for six years, so I didn’t want to leave him at home.

I also liked the idea of having a friend during my trip.

So, I looked at Max and said, “You’re coming with me.”

The first trailer was for Max, and the second one was for things like tools and food.

There was dog food, and a lot of peanut M&Ms for me, for energy.

I cycled around San Diego with the bike trailers to get used to it.

And a few weeks later, it was my 50th birthday.

My family and friends from all over the world visited me.

We had a big party in San Diego from Friday to Sunday.

Then, Monday morning, it was time to go.

Everybody came to the parking lot of the hotel where we were staying.

They watched me get on my bike, and they cheered as I rode away.

Y ocasionalmente, acampaba.

I was doing really well during the first weeks of my trip.

I usually rode about six days a week.

After my difficult ride up the mountain, there were a few more hard days.

Like when I rode through the state of South Dakota.

There were eight days of temperatures around 40 degrees Celsius.

On the eighth day, Max just sat down and looked at me.

It was almost like he was saying, “I’m done.” He did not want to move.

But in general, we had an amazing adventure.

One time, I was riding on a road in the state of Vermont, and it was raining.

Then I saw a couple standing outside of their house.

They were waiting for me, and the woman offered me a drink.

She said, “We saw you on the road.

Why don’t you spend the night here and wait for the rain to stop?”

It’s true that every part of the U.S.

has its own culture.

Southerners are friendly, westerners like to do activities outside, people from Texas make great barbecue, and there’s great jazz music in Louisiana.

But I also discovered that people were very similar.

Everywhere I went, people were curious, friendly, and generous.

Most of them will do anything to help others.

It was my parents, and they were very worried.

They asked me, “Where are you?” I told them, “You know where I am.

I’m riding through Delaware.” They told me to go inside now and get ready to stay there for a few days.

But I could not stop for a few days.

I was almost finished.

I just had three more states to ride through: Maryland, West Virginia, and Virginia.

That was going to take at least five days.

And I needed to do it before my flight to Hawaii in seven days.

The storm didn’t come to where I was, but there was a lot of rain.

So I stayed inside for two days, and then I got back on my bike.

I left Max and the trailers with my friend.

I had to cycle through very deep floods, but I was able to go through the states of West Virginia and Virginia.

And then I had to go back to Washington D.C.

for my flight.

It’s a difficult ride, but it’s amazing.

There is an incredible view of Hawaii and the ocean all around it.

I was finally at the end of my adventure.

I reached the top of the mountain, and I was so happy.

I remembered the first mountain that I cycled up in California.

I thought I couldn’t get to the top.

But as I looked at the ocean, I thought, “I did it.

I did exactly what I planned to do.”

The trip was amazing, and I learned a lot about my country.

I saw so many interesting places and met so many new people.

Every day, people showed me that they were generous, caring, and welcoming.

And it felt wonderful to be back home.

I chose that subject because I was interested in the way people told stories.

In my classes, we learned to study the world through stories, including folklore, mythology, and other stories that people tell about their lives and the world.

It’s an amazing way to learn about people and the places they come from.

I thought of the Mississippi River.

It’s one of the longest rivers in the United States.

It goes through ten states from north to south.

I was interested in going to the southern part.

I didn’t know a lot about that part of my country, but I knew that there was a strong storytelling tradition there.

So, I decided to go there and listen to people’s stories.

It was also a great opportunity to explore my country.

I love cycling.

And I realized that I could ride my bike all the way down the Mississippi River, from the northern part of the U.S.

to the Gulf of Mexico.

I looked at the map and made a plan to ride my bike 1,300 kilometers from the state of Tennessee to the end of the Mississippi River in Louisiana.

I also wore a sign around my neck.

The sign asked people to tell me a story.

I wanted to hear any story that anyone wanted to tell me.

The river was wide and powerful.

I didn’t know what to expect during the trip, but I was excited.

I knew riding was going to be hard, but I was ready to start my adventure.

I didn’t even know how to change a flat tire when I started.

But the challenges didn’t bother me.

I just loved being on my bike.

It was different from being in a car or a train because I could stop and explore the areas between cities.

It was an amazing way to see that part of the country.

People were so kind.

Everywhere I went, people talked to me.

They even offered to let me stay in their homes.

I brought a tent because I expected to camp, but I didn’t use it often.

People in the Southern United States have a tradition of being very friendly and helpful.

One woman even bought me a bright colored shirt and lights for my bike because she wanted people in trucks to see me when I was cycling.

In a town outside of the city of New Orleans, I met a 57-year-old woman named Franny.

She had red hair and a big smile, and she invited me to share lunch on a hot afternoon.

She told me that a hurricane destroyed her whole house and her neighborhood.

Franny said that there were hurricanes in the area almost every year, and eventually, living there wasn’t going to be possible anymore.

I talked to people who lived near the Mississippi River for their whole lives, and their parents and grandparents lived there, too.

Some of them told me about storms and floods that changed their lives.

Others told me about their neighbors who had made the difficult decision to leave.

The road suddenly ended.

There was water everywhere, and I couldn’t see the Gulf of Mexico, but I could smell the salt.

I was excited to be there.

I stopped a car and asked the driver to take my picture.

And that was it.

I had made it to the end of my journey.

After that, I just had to get back to the airport.

It was time to go home.

When I was writing my thesis, I realized that my adventure wasn’t finished.

In fact, it was just starting! Climate change is a big issue for everyone, and I wanted to hear about how it affects people all over the world.

So, I decided to continue riding my bike and listening to stories about people’s relationship to water and climate change.

Cycling is a way to be kind to the environment.

And it’s an incredible way to connect with people and places.

My ride down the Mississippi River turned out to be the start of much more than a thesis project.

One year later, I took my bicycle to New Zealand to start the next part of my adventure.

As I rode down the coast, with the wind in my face, I felt like I was doing exactly what I was born to do.
