Episodio 51: Viral Videos (Videos virales)

He had a little résumé in his hand and he gave it to the boss.

It was a really fun way to surprise them.

I didn’t know what was going to happen, but I wasn’t nervous.

I just wanted to show them who I am.

I’m a mom, I need to work, and I don’t have childcare.

It was really nice to be so honest at a job interview.

I posted it to TikTok, and then I went to sleep.

When I woke up, my phone was exploding with TikTok messages.

My video went viral while I was sleeping! I couldn’t believe it.

A las pocas semanas, sus jefes la despidieron, she was laid off.

They called me and told me that I was laid off due to the pandemic, so it was my last day at my job.

I was in shock.

I worked at the company for 13 years, and I loved my job.

And then I was laid off in the middle of maternity leave.

It was horrible.

I tried to have online interviews when Mylo was sleeping, but it didn’t work.

One time, I put on makeup, which takes a long time, and I dressed up.

But as soon as I sat down for the call, Mylo woke up, and I had to cancel the interview.

I felt really disappointed.

I wondered, “How can I find a job and take care of my son at the same time?”

A few days after my first interview, they called me and asked me to come back to their office for a second interview.

But they wanted me to come that same day.

I didn’t have a lot of time to get ready, so I decided to be honest.

I said, “I’m sorry, but I don’t have childcare.”

They said, “That’s OK.

You can bring your son!” I couldn’t believe they were going to let me bring Mylo to the interview! In the United States, this is really uncommon.

So I replied and said, “OK, great.

We’ll be there, and we’ll be ready!”

My friend gave me the perfect little suit for Mylo.

It was white and blue.

He also had a white shirt and a tie, so he looked like a little businessman.

I called my husband, and I told him that I had to go to an interview.

I explained that I could bring Mylo, and I wanted to make a résumé for him.

So, he helped me think of some of Mylo’s skills to put on the résumé.

When I finished making Mylo’s résumé, I thought, “I’m going to make a video of this whole thing and post it to TikTok!” But I only expected my mom and my sister to see it.

So I woke up Mylo, and I started making a video.

In the beginning of the video, I dressed him and combed his hair.

In the middle of the video, Mylo went outside and cleaned his stroller with soap and water.

Then at the end of the video, I drove to the interview and Mylo and I walked into the building together.

The owner of the company finished his sandwich, and there was a pickle on his plate.

Mylo wanted the pickle, so the owner gave it to him.

He ate it and made a huge mess, which got all over my hands.

It was kind of disgusting.

But after the interview was over, I shook hands with everyone and they didn’t mind.

When I woke up, I was shocked and confused.

Already, 537 people liked the video! I called my sister and my husband immediately.

Then I read everyone’s comments, and they were all so positive.

So many moms were talking about how they also couldn’t afford childcare.

Talking to journalists was new for me, and I didn’t understand anything about childcare laws in the United States.

But because I had the opportunity to speak for parents in similar situations, I knew that I needed to learn about all of it.

Because of that viral video, I started to create more content about my life and experiences.

Now I work with a few companies and organizations, and I’m growing my community on TikTok.

I still speak about the impacts of the childcare crisis in the United States, and I’m trying to change it.

I want better pay for employees and childcare that everyone can afford.

I recently spoke at a national conference with other people who want to help with this problem.

We discussed how to use traditional media to talk about this crisis.

And I spoke about using social media and your own voice to help with the issue.

Having a family is a big part of many people’s lives, but they often have to hide it when they come to work.

I just think it’s time to change that.

I saved videos of my interviews and the comments I received on TikTok.

Mylo was a part of a viral video about the childcare problem in the United States and one day I want him to see how important that was!

I was shocked.

Did people really talk about this stuff on social media? She was talking about how she wore wigs made of human hair.

Her wigs looked like her real hair! I was surprised to learn that they were comfortable, too.

Both of my parents had problems with hair loss.

So I knew that I was probably going to lose my hair, too.

But in my early 20s, I started losing a lot more hair than I expected.

I was sad, and I felt alone.

I didn’t think anyone else my age was losing their hair.

I thought it usually happened to people when they’re older.

I just wanted to be young and enjoy my life!

He said, “You’re losing your hair, and I don’t think we can go out anymore.” It was so horrible and disappointing.

Losing my hair was my biggest insecurity, and it was his reason for breaking up with me.

I tried to hide it, so I wore a lot of baseball hats.

But it was really hard to match outfits with baseball hats! So, I stopped dressing up and putting on makeup.

And I never tried to make my hair look nice because I never liked the way it looked.

When I met my husband, I talked about my insecurities about my hair for the first time.

He was so supportive, and he loved me for who I was.

It didn’t matter to him that I was losing my hair.

He helped me become confident again, and see that I really am beautiful.

In 2014, I decided to start wearing a wig.

My husband and I went to a small local wig shop here in the city of Tulsa, in the state of Oklahoma.

I bought a $300 brown wig.

It was synthetic, so it wasn’t real hair.

Later that day, I wore it to the mall with my husband.

He supported me the whole time, but I felt uncomfortable.

I worried everyone knew that it wasn’t my real hair.

I decided to accept that I was going to continue losing my hair, and that there was no other option for me.

I loved all of her wigs, and I decided that I wanted to buy my own wig made of human hair.

So, I did a lot of research.

I tried to learn everything about them.

After I ordered it, I couldn’t wait for it to arrive.

It came on a Saturday morning at eight o’clock am.

My husband actually opened the box because he was so excited for me.

He said, “It’s here, it’s here!” I tried it on in my bathroom, and I just started crying because it looked like my hair! After ten difficult years, I finally found something that made me feel confident and beautiful.

In the video, I show how I put on my wig.

Then, you can see a picture of me with and without the wig at the end of the video.

There’s a big difference! I posted it, and I was a little bit nervous.

I thought people on TikTok might not be as nice as my friends and family.

I definitely never expected thousands of people to see it.

I was driving my daughter to the pool in our neighborhood and when I was in the parking lot, I saw an email from TikTok.

So, I opened the app.

I was shocked because over one million people watched my video! People were so supportive and kind.

They said, “Where did you get your wig?” Or “Wow, it looks so real!” I couldn’t believe it.

Suddenly, I had so many new messages from women like me who were also losing their hair.

They wanted to talk to someone who was dealing with the same thing.

Now I have more than 200,000 followers.

I share my experiences with losing my hair, being a mom, and just life in general.

I try to create a space where women feel supported.

I want to help women love themselves and to know that they’re already beautiful.

It doesn’t matter what anyone else says.

My face shows so much joy when I’m wearing a wig.

It makes me so happy, and I know that’s a strange thing to say about a wig, but it really changed my life.

I think it’s important to always love yourself.

And it’s also okay to enjoy things that make you feel beautiful.
