Episodio 53: Yoga Careers (Trabajos de yoga)

One Saturday morning, I was teaching yoga at a local university.

It’s a very popular time for a class, so the room was full of people.

There were probably 60 people there.

It was my biggest class ever.

And, as usual, most of the students were white.

They said, “We were so surprised that you were our teacher!” I think it was the first time that they saw a Black woman teaching yoga.

They said that kind of representation was important to them.

And in that moment, I realized that something was wrong.

It shouldn’t be surprising to see a Black woman teaching yoga.

And it’s a big problem when so many Black Americans don’t feel welcome in yoga studios.

So I decided that I was going to try to fix it.

The documentary was amazing.

It reminded me that I had the power to do important things in my life.

And I realized that I could use yoga to feel more connected to the world.

It would be good for my body and my mind.

So, I began to take classes.

In my experience, there wasn’t a lot of diversity in yoga.

The studios in my area were mostly owned by white people, and only white people worked there.

And I think that’s probably why most of the students were white.

I never really felt comfortable in that space.

They played music that I didn’t usually listen to.

And sometimes people looked really surprised when I walked into the class because I didn’t look like most of the other people who did yoga.

So, I was never totally comfortable, and it was hard to feel connected to my yoga practice.

I was in a pose that was very difficult because I had to stand on one leg.

As I was in that pose, the teacher told the class not to worry about being perfect.

Yoga isn’t about being perfect.

And then I felt so peaceful.

In that moment, I realized that yoga is not only good for your body — it’s good for your mind, too.

I was having some amazing experiences with yoga, so I wanted to understand it better.

When I started training to be a teacher, I realized that I could learn so much from yoga.

I also noticed that I was the only Black person in the training.

I wasn’t surprised, but I wanted to do something about it.

I wanted to have the class in a park because it was less intimidating than a traditional yoga studio.

I didn’t know what to call the class, but then I suddenly had an idea: “AfroYoga.” As soon as I heard those words, I knew it was an amazing name.

I posted information about the event online, and I put signs around the city.

A lot of people were interested, and more than 60 people of color came to class that day!

It was a sunny summer morning, and it was hot.

The class was in a big area of the park with lots of grass and trees.

Ten minutes before the class, people were already arriving.

And in the end, so many people came! I will never forget the feeling of seeing everyone practicing yoga together in that big, grassy field.

During the class, I played music by Erykah Badu, Solange, and other artists who Black people know and love.

I knew this music was important to help everyone feel comfortable and more connected to the yoga practice.

When the class finished, I looked at the sun shining on the crowd.

It was amazing to see so many women of color, of all ages, shapes, and sizes.

I had to teach the entire class while holding the microphone in one hand.

A lot of people couldn’t hear me, so they had to watch the rest of the class to know which pose to do.

It wasn’t perfect, but everyone was so happy to be there and to see Black representation in the yoga community.

Some people cried and told me how important the class was because it was the first time they practiced yoga with only people of color.

I contacted a Black restaurant owner in my city of Sacramento, and we organized a yoga brunch.

I taught yoga, she provided the food, and we had a DJ.

I also taught yoga classes at a university, and I spoke about the philosophy of yoga.

After I started organizing more events, people started contacting me.

I built a community and a business, and I wanted to help other people do the same thing.

I thought if I could help more people of color start teaching yoga, then there could be more diversity in yoga in the U.S.

Teachers are an important part of the experience of yoga, especially for people who are trying it for the first time.

So, they need to understand and think about culture and diversity in their classes.

As a teacher, I have the responsibility to give students the best possible experience, so everyone always feels welcome.

Goats are so calm and funny.

I was a very anxious person, and being around them was relaxing.

In the spring of 2015, I bought two goats, and I became obsessed.

I took photos of them all the time.

And when I came home from work each day, I immediately went out to see my goats.

My job was becoming very difficult.

It was hard to walk up the stairs at work, and my coworkers had to help me get to my car.

It was pretty bad.

But my goats always made me feel better.

They helped me a lot, so when my friends said they were stressed at work, I told them to spend some time with the goats.

And everyone loved it.

One day, a yoga teacher came to see the goats.

We were standing in the field, and the goats were jumping around.

The teacher said, “I want to have a yoga class here!” I agreed, but I told her that the goats were going to jump on everyone.

She said, “Cool, let’s do it.”

400 people were interested in coming! But that was way too many for my farm.

So, only 40 people could come.

The group was mostly from the city of Seattle, which is four hours away, and the city of Portland, which is two hours away.

But some people drove ten hours from the state of California!

It was amazing.

It was a hot evening in August.

The sunset was beautiful that night, and we had the class in an open field on my farm.

The goats just laid next to the people the whole time.

It was very relaxing.

And after 30 minutes of yoga, we all had a glass of wine together in the field while looking at the mountains.

My baby goat, Annie, was jumping on people during the class.

She jumped on their backs while they were posing on their hands and knees.

It was funny because people didn’t want to bother her, so they stayed in that pose for a long time.

And it’s hard not to laugh when a goat jumps on your back! They thought it was awesome.

I remember feeling very sick.

My niece came to help me with the yoga class.

I just couldn’t do it by myself anymore.

It was a very strange time in my life because a lot of really good things and really bad things were happening at the same time.

I took pictures of the first class and sent them to a magazine.

They responded to me a few minutes later, and then I had my first interview.

After that, I spoke to a local newspaper.

And then, The New York Times wanted to do a story about the class!

In your news today…

I had 30 or 40 interviews every day, from all over the world: Pakistan, Ireland, Australia.

My life became really busy! I had a full-time job, and I didn’t tell my boss about my classes.

But one day, he told me he read about it on CNN.

I think it went viral because people just wanted to read a fun article.

It’s a lot of fun to help people start their businesses.

Every farm is a little different, but all of the classes are very basic.

Everyone is down on the ground a lot, so they’re very close to the goats.

The people who come to the classes don’t always have a lot of yoga experience, but they just really love animals.

Yoga classes can be difficult and scary.

But the yoga classes with goats aren’t scary at all.

And people of all ages and abilities come! Everyone feels comfortable because they’re only paying attention to the goats.

You also feel like you’re part of a community because everyone is doing something silly together.

And the goats don’t care how good you are at yoga!
