Episodio 56: Life in L.A. - Hollywood Culture

That scene was really difficult.

In the scene, a man put his arm into some water and pulled out a lobster.

I was a little worried.

I thought to myself, “What does this sound like in real life? And how can I create this sound in the studio?”

Most studios don’t have lobsters.

So, I searched for other props.

The studio had a lot of things to choose from, including: balloons, metal cans, belts, and a lot more.

But none of those things could sound like a lobster in water.

As a professional foley artist in Hollywood, I knew I could find exactly what I needed.

So I continued to look for the right objects to make that perfect sound.

During the first few years of college, I didn’t know what I wanted to do.

But then I took a class that was really interesting.

It was about post-production, or all the things that happen after a TV show or movie is filmed.

My first assignment for this class was to watch a three minute video and then create sounds for everything happening in the video.

Foley is the art of using materials like fabric, glass, metal, or any common object to create sound effects in movies and TV.

I learned about foley for the first time when I took that post-production class, and I thought it was so exciting.

Immediately, I knew that I wanted to make it my career.

I thought foley was so interesting.

I finished my first foley assignment in my class quickly, and I loved it so much that I asked some of my classmates if I could do their assignments, too! And then I realized that this could be my career.

I wanted to be a foley artist…in Hollywood!

My only experience with foley was in college, but I was still confident and very excited.

I just needed to find a job in Hollywood.

So I started going to post-production studios and introducing myself.

I said, “Hi, I’m a new foley artist, and I’m looking for a job.”

Tara trabajó duro, buscando su gran oportunidad.

Visitó casi cincuenta estudios, hizo nuevos contactos y muchas llamadas.

I had to search for background sounds and then I added them to the TV show.

Background sounds are things like children playing at school, the sound of a water fountain, or a tree blowing in the wind.

So, these sounds are not the main thing happening in the scene — it’s a small part of everything you hear in TV and movies.

Six months after I moved to Los Angeles, someone finally called me back.

They needed a foley artist for a film called The Guitar.

I said yes immediately.

I was so excited to have my first foley job!

Finally, I found a chamois, which is like a soft piece of leather.

And then I found a plastic flashlight.

I took the batteries out and put a spoon and a wet chamois into it.

Then I shook it.

The sound it made was just perfect.

I recorded it, and then it became part of the show later.

That’s what it’s like to be a foley artist — it’s a new challenge every day, and I absolutely love it.

There was so much work to do, and I was the only foley artist doing footsteps on the show, so I had to do the footsteps for all the characters for the whole first season!

There are lots of different ways to make the sounds of footsteps.

And I had to make footsteps for many different situations — for example, when a character was walking on a wood floor, on grass, or on a street in the rain.

In the studio, I created these sounds using different types of wood as well as other materials like dry grass and water.

To make the footsteps, I had to walk around in small spaces and put my feet in strange positions.

Often, I had to stand on one foot and then create the sound of footsteps with my other foot.

It was difficult and uncomfortable to do this for so many hours.

You need to have a lot of strange skills to be good at this job, and you need to be very patient.

I learned that it could be very hard physically, but I take better care of my body now to do this job that I love so much.

I’ll never forget this one night working on the show Atlanta in 2017.

I went to work at 6:00 pm, and I thought it was just going to be a regular day.

But soon after I started, I realized the episode I was working on was very special.

I had to create sounds I never had to do on other episodes — like the sound of an old elevator getting stuck.

My colleagues and I really concentrated on the episode, and we didn’t finish working until 2:00 am!

I was talking to a friend one day, and suddenly he said, “Congratulations!” And I just looked at him and said, “For what?” And he said, “You were just nominated for three Emmys!”

And the winner is…Atlanta!

I was in shock! I started walking up to the stage with my colleagues, and my heart was beating quickly.

I was so excited.

There were a lot of famous people in the audience.

And I was the only woman on the stage.

After all my hard work, I felt so proud standing up there.

It was definitely the best moment of my career as a foley artist in Hollywood.

She wanted me to be her costume designer”.

I grew up in England in the 1960s and 1970s.

As a kid, I used to watch older films from the 1940s and 1950s with my mother, and I fell in love with the clothing in the films! Ginger Rogers, Katharine Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe — all of these incredible actresses were so fashionable.

When I was 18, I lived in London, and I used to shop at vintage clothing stores.

I really wanted to look like the actress Katharine Hepburn.

She wore clothing that men usually wore, but she made it look very elegant.

And that’s how I wanted to look.

I moved to an area in Los Angeles called Venice Beach, where a lot of other artists lived, and I started taking acting classes.

My neighborhood had some great vintage shops, but I couldn’t just spend all day taking classes and shopping for great outfits.

I had to pay my bills! So, I got a job at a restaurant.

I began by working with some friends from my acting class.

I went to their houses and created outfits for them with clothing they already had.

I also showed them how to create new outfits themselves.

Everyone loved it! That was when I realized that I had a natural talent with fashion.

I looked at his clothes, and I gave him some advice about fashion.

I told him that it’s important to wear clothing that works for your personality and body — instead of what’s popular.

And you should only buy high-quality clothing that you can wear for many years.

He thought I was great, so he wanted me to talk to his friend, who was a Hollywood agent for costume designers.

I didn’t understand why an agent would want to talk to me.

So, instead of being excited, I was nervous.

I thought: “I didn’t go to fashion school, and I have never worked in the costume design industry.

I have no résumé or real experience.

Why would a Hollywood agent want to talk to me?!”

I was the costume designer’s assistant on the show.

He liked that I understood exactly how the characters should look.

He saw that I was talented, and he gave me space to use my talent.

Fran told me that if she ever had her own TV show, she wanted me to be her costume designer.

And a few years later, in 1993, that’s exactly what happened! I got a job as the costume designer for a new show that would eventually be extremely popular around the world — The Nanny.

And the star was Fran Drescher!

In the beginning, I didn’t have a plan for the costumes for The Nanny, but I wanted to create something special and classic.

I wanted everyone to love the nanny’s clothes, even 20 or 30 years later.

I knew that I wanted Fran’s character to look cool, confident, and fashionable.

And most importantly, I wanted the audience to look at her clothing and smile before she even said anything.

After I read each script, I usually spent two days shopping.

I had a lot of ideas while I looked at clothing in stores.

As I shopped, I thought about what each character will wear in each scene and how all of the outfits were going to look together.

Guest stars came on the show often, and they usually brought their own outfits or asked me to choose an outfit for them before they arrived.

One time, the famous singer Patti LaBelle was a guest star.

She was supposed to bring her own outfit, but she forgot it!

It was difficult to find a great outfit for Patti.

I looked around the studio and found a pair of bell bottoms, which are pants that are very wide at the bottom.

And then I went to a store and bought a big, yellow skirt.

I cut the front of the skirt and put it over the pants.

I also bought a shiny black jacket to go on top.

In the end, it looked incredible, and it was one of my favorite outfits from The Nanny.

Take one!

Every time we filmed an episode, I watched Fran on the stage.

I paid attention to how her clothes looked and moved.

And if I needed to change something, she always let me do it.

We were the perfect team!

People still talk about the outfits from the show, and that makes me so happy.

Many people have contacted me on social media and told me that the clothes from The Nanny helped them feel confident to wear whatever they wanted.

Giving people confidence is such a great feeling!
