Episodio 77: Life in Miami - A Taste of Little Havana
My grandfather wanted it to be special, so he decided to decorate the inside of the restaurant with mirrors and a lot of gold.
It looked like the famous Palace of Versailles in France.
And in Cuba, where my grandfather is from, things that looked elegant were called “Versailles.” So my grandfather thought, “I’ll call my restaurant Versailles!”
I don’t think my grandfather expected Versailles to become such an important part of Cuban culture in Miami.
He didn’t just serve coffee.
He created a home for people who didn’t have one anymore.
My grandfather came with my grandmother, who was pregnant, and their two children.
They couldn’t bring a lot of things with them, and their lives were difficult when they arrived.
They tried to rent an apartment, but there were signs in the windows that said, “No children, no animals, no Cubans.” That was a hard time in their lives, and for many Cubans in Miami at the time.
My grandfather knew that Cubans preferred the same kind of coffee they had at home.
Cuban coffee, or cafecito, is similar to Italian espresso: it’s strong and it has a lot of sugar in it.
Cubans love sugar.
When I was five years old, my grandmother gave me my first café con leche — which is Cuban coffee with milk.
I liked it immediately.
I still drink one every morning.
The literal translation of ropa vieja is “old clothes.” It’s shredded beef that is cooked slowly in a tomato sauce with peppers and onions.
When it’s finished, it kind of looks like shredded old clothes.
It’s usually served with white rice.
And the Cuban sandwich is made with sweet ham, roasted pork, and Swiss cheese on special Cuban bread.
We even make our own bread here in the bakery.
The sandwich has been on our menu since the restaurant opened, and everyone loves it.
We can never take it off the menu because we don’t want our customers to be upset!
My grandfather had an idea.
He made a window on the side of the restaurant that moved up and down.
He called it a ventanita.
When customers walked up to the window, someone opened it to take their orders and give them their food.
And the rest of the restaurant stayed cool in the Miami heat.
I don’t think he knew the ventanita was going to be so popular!
In Cuban culture, coffee is a very social thing.
People go to the ventanita to see their friends, to chat with the people who work there, and to hear about what’s happening in the community.
There’s a whole group of older people who go there every day to talk about politics.
They usually order a cafecito and maybe some croquetas, and then they leave.
A common mistake for tourists is to order and drink an entire colada, which is a double portion of Cuban coffee in a small cup.
It always comes with a lot of tiny little cups because normally, people buy it to share with other people.
But tourists don’t realize that they should share it, and they drink the whole thing! When I see that, I think, “Wow, you’re probably not going to sleep at all tonight!”
I remember that it was the day after Thanksgiving in 2016.
I was at home with some friends.
Before then, we heard rumors about it, but when we saw on the news that Fidel Castro died, we realized it was true.
Everyone in the community was going to Versailles to celebrate, and we knew a lot of journalists for TV news channels were going to be there too, including CNN, Univision, and Telemundo.
It was my job to talk to them.
I had the phone numbers for all the news channels and the police department.
So, I started making calls.
It was late on Friday, and I stayed at the restaurant all night.
The next day, I went up to the roof and looked down.
I couldn’t even see the street because there were so many people.
A lot of those people had to leave Cuba because of Castro.
For them, Castro caused a lot of pain, and took away their lives.
They were playing Cuban music, dancing, hitting pots and pans, and waving their flags.
And it was all happening at Versailles.
It made me really emotional.
Versailles is important to a lot of people.
They call it the Cuban White House.
It’s a lot of responsibility, but it’s a big honor to continue my grandfather’s tradition.
We had a Ferris wheel and musicians played all day.
We celebrated by bringing back our prices from 1971.
So, we sold croquetas for ten cents and Cuban sandwiches for 35 cents.
People wrote about their memories at the restaurant, and we put those papers on the walls, along with pictures of the celebrities who visited.
My grandfather was sick at the time, but he still wanted to be there.
I was so glad he was able to come.
I can still remember the look on his face that night.
He was just smiling from ear to ear.
Many of the people who left Cuba expected to go back one day.
They waited for a year, and then one year turned into ten years, and ten years turned into fifty years.
And here we are.
Versailles became a second home for so many Cubans in Miami.
It’s a place where they can speak their language, eat their food, drink their coffee, talk to friends, cry, protest, and celebrate.
It became something so much bigger than just a restaurant.
I know my grandfather wanted to go back to Cuba.
But really, Miami was his home.
Calle Ocho has a great history.
When Cubans first came to Miami, it was a really busy street.
There was a lot of energy there.
People were always outside talking, smoking cigars, and having coffees together at a little ventanita.
My grandparents said that it really felt like you were in Cuba.
There were roosters walking around everywhere, and you could always hear Cuban music playing somewhere in Little Havana.
In the ’80s and ’90s, it wasn’t a nice place.
Parts of Miami had big problems.
And people in Little Havana started moving out of the city.
There were lots of empty stores everywhere, so it almost looked like no one lived in the neighborhood.
In six months, I lost my job, I got a divorce, and I learned that I had cancer.
Luckily, I learned about the cancer early, but it was still a really difficult time.
I didn’t have a job, and I was taking care of my children by myself.
It was not my plan.
I had to start picking mangoes from the trees in my mom’s backyard, and I sold them on the street to make money for food.
I always try to forget those moments.
Ice cream was a tradition in my family.
My grandmother made it with fresh fruit and milk.
When my grandparents still lived in Cuba, they traveled all over Latin America for my grandfather’s job.
And wherever they went, my grandmother made ice cream with local fruit.
Every Cuban knows the singer Celia Cruz.
She was very famous, and she is known for saying azúcar.
That’s because when she was eating lunch in Little Havana one day, the waiter brought Celia her coffee and asked, “Would you like that con azúcar o sin azúcar?” And Cubans love sugar.
So, she looked at him like, “Is this a joke?” And then she screamed, “AZÚCAR!” She told this story at one of her concerts, and the crowd loved it.
So, I knew that Cubans were going to understand the name of my shop!
First, I went to Los Pinareños, which is a market in Little Havana, and it’s very close to my shop.
It’s been there for more than 50 years.
It’s really like being back in Cuba.
They had the best mamey, which is a fruit that tastes like a watermelon and a melon.
It looks like a little football, and when you cut it open, it has a beautiful red color inside.
Cubans love it.
I also bought my guarapo, or sugarcane, there.
I planned to add it to pineapple to make a sorbet.
This is a type of banana found in the Caribbean, and it’s a totally different kind of banana from what most people in the U.S.
know.
When it first starts to grow, it’s long and green.
You can cut it into pieces and fry it to make a tostón.
But if you let it grow longer, it becomes darker and sweeter.
I buy them when they are almost black.
I asked for five or six plátanos, and I carried them back to my shop across the street.
Then I immediately put them into milk.
When the people at El Nuevo Siglo heard about what I was doing, they offered me a discount.
I just needed to bring them some ice cream!
It was a huge moment.
The inspector came in and gave me a piece of paper.
Then he said, “OK, you can open your shop — today, right now!” I couldn’t believe it.
I didn’t even have any workers yet, but I was so excited for people to try my flavors, so I called all my friends to help me.
We had no idea what we were doing.
But my shop was immediately successful!
When they came into the shop, they asked, “Hey, where’s the mantecado? You’ve got to have mantecado.” I was embarrassed because I didn’t know what they were talking about.
Then I learned that it’s a vanilla flavor, but Cuban.
It’s an egg-based ice-cream, with nutmeg and cinnamon.
I let the guys try it, and they said things like, “It needs more cinnamon!” Or “a little more nutmeg!” I really wanted it to be perfect, so I kept working on it.
Finally, they all agreed it was delicious.
I was a little worried.
I asked, “Is everything okay?” He asked me to come over to him, and then he held my hands.
He said he couldn’t believe that I made this mantecado.
It was so great that it took him back to Cuba.
And I thought, “That’s what I do, I sell memories.
I let people taste the past again.” It makes me cry when I remember it!
It’s so great to see everybody outside, walking, talking, smoking their cigars, and laughing.
I love the sweet smell of ice cream cones that comes from my shop.
When I walk down Calle Ocho now, I smile and I think, “Wow, we built a very beautiful neighborhood.”
