Episodio 80: Life in Miami - Sun and Storms

Elliot Key is a very beautiful place.

When you’re there, you feel like you’re far from everything.

And it looks like someone spilled glitter on the water because it’s so shiny and blue.

It’s really peaceful — it’s my happy place.

It happened very quickly.

We could see that one half of the sky was blue with no clouds, and the other half of the sky was gray.

So we thought we should probably get ready to leave.

We started packing the things on our boat.

We got everything we needed for fishing, the chairs, and the umbrella.

But when I tried to start the boat, I realized we were in trouble.

You can go on a boat, go swimming, go fishing, ride a bike, and have a picnic outside because there’s good weather all year.

There are lakes and rivers everywhere.

And the ocean is also all around the city.

So, in Miami, people love boats.

My family has a boat we use all the time.

We can take the Palencana anywhere.

When we wanted to bring the boat to the water to go fishing, we put it on the roof of our car.

When I was a kid, fishing with my family was one of my favorite things to do.

Aaron and I have a special tradition: We always buy chicken sandwiches from Publix, which is a supermarket in Florida.

Then, we eat the sandwiches on the boat.

Publix sandwiches are really popular in Miami.

They’re huge and delicious.

If we don’t have them, we will not get on the boat at all.

That’s how important the tradition is.

Usually, when the moon goes down and the sun comes up, the tide changes, and there are no waves.

It looks like you’re looking at a mirror.

It’s the most beautiful thing in the world.

The water was super clear, and you could see all the fish swimming around.

Sometimes, you can also see other sea life like dolphins, little blue crabs, and even sea turtles.

And there are a lot of birds.

It’s really beautiful.

On that day, we caught three fish!

Miami’s weather changes really fast, and you never know when it will start raining.

I checked the weather before we left, and it said that there might be rain.

But I didn’t think it was going to be a problem.

I started the motor and it made a strange sound, VRRRRRR.

Lo intentó de nuevo…

VRRRRRR DO DO DO DO…

Soon, we realized that we needed to ask for help.

Most of the boats around were already leaving, but we noticed one boat across the water that didn’t leave yet.

We jumped in the water and started to swim to it while we pulled our boat with us.

I said, in Spanish, “Hey, I’m sorry to bother you.

Our little boat needs some gas.

If you can give us two gallons, I can pay you for it.” And he said, “Oh, we don’t have any extra gas.

All my gas is in the boat.”

He said, “I’m going to give you some of my gas!” I said, “Are you sure? Will you have enough gas for your own boat?” He said, “Yeah, I’ll be fine.” I really wanted to pay him, but he said, “No, you don’t need to pay me.

I have a son.

And if he needs help one day, I hope someone will help him, too.

And if you find somebody else in this situation, you can do the same thing for them.”

Miami feels like a community, so things like that happen all the time.

Families come together and take care of each other here, so of course we take care of our neighbors too.

At first, I didn’t think the man was going to help me, but after he told me that he had a son, I understood.

He sounded like all of my relatives! He was taking care of his community, and he wanted the community to take care of his family, too.

Coming to live in Miami was like a dream.

I loved that it was a big place with amazing weather.

I came here from New York City, which is very busy, and there are lots of buildings, so it’s hard to see sunrises and sunsets.

But in Miami, there’s a lot more space and a different climate.

I saw so many new and interesting animals, which I really loved!

When I came to Miami and saw all of the wildlife here, I couldn’t believe it.

It was amazing! That’s when I realized that I wanted to work with animals.

When I first started this job, I worked with a very large turtle named Goliath.

And he is still around today.

He is a type of turtle from the Galapagos Islands in the Pacific Ocean.

He is about 105 years old, and he weighs more than 200 kilograms.

He is really special to me.

I also worked with Samantha, a 50-year-old chimpanzee.

I always have a snack for her, so she is very excited when she sees me.

Flamingos are very beautiful birds, but they also smell really bad! And they make really disgusting sounds! But without the smells or the sounds, they’re beautiful.

And at Zoo Miami you don’t even have to pay to see them.

So, all of our visitors love them.

In Miami, the season for hurricanes is between the months of June and November.

Most years, there are smaller hurricanes, which are more like thunderstorms with really strong winds.

But sometimes, there’s a huge hurricane that destroys a lot of things in the city.

So, every summer, the zoo gets ready.

And if we know that a hurricane is coming, we have to work quickly to make sure that all of the animals are safe.

It was a beautiful morning.

There were blue skies and lots of white clouds.

Usually, if you walk into the zoo in the morning, you see lots of wildlife everywhere.

But on that morning, I didn’t see anything.

It’s like the animals knew that the storm was coming.

We started bringing all of them inside.

But some animals, like the flamingos, had to be near water, so we needed to find the right place for them.

The bathroom doesn’t have windows, so it’s a very safe place during a hurricane.

It also has water — in the toilets! And it’s easy to clean the floor, which is important because flamingos are very messy birds.

It was the perfect solution.

But the hard part was getting all of the flamingos into the bathroom! We had to jump into the lake to grab them, and, of course, they were making lots of noise!

I always have a small camera with me.

And after I brought the last flamingo into the bathroom, I decided to take a photo.

There’s one flamingo in the picture that is under a sink, and he’s looking at the camera.

It’s like he’s saying, “What is happening here?!”

I said, “I hope this hurricane actually comes.

I’m tired of doing all this work for nothing.” The man was older than me, and he had a lot more experience with hurricanes.

I remember that he looked at me and said, “Trust me, you don’t want the hurricane to come.” Now, I have more experience, and I’m embarrassed that I said that.

It sounded like a train was driving through our house.

It was so loud, and it hurt our ears.

The windows in our bedroom broke, and we could hear parts of our roof coming off!

I saw a couch in my front yard, and the second floor of a nearby house was gone! A lot of trees fell down, and they were everywhere — on houses and cars.

Everything was destroyed.

And I remember saying, “I have to get back to the zoo to make sure the animals are okay!”

The zoo was very quiet.

All I could hear was the wind.

And it looked really bad.

I worked there for more than ten years, but when I arrived that morning, nothing looked familiar.

So many trees fell on paths and roads.

It was horrible.

A few small animals escaped.

Goliath the turtle, was just walking around outside like he was on a little vacation.

On the other hand, the chimpanzees were very scared after the storm, including Samantha.

She was terrified and very quiet.

And unfortunately, almost 100 birds died as well as five other animals.

The flamingos were just standing together in a group, just like when I left them.

They were totally fine, and I was so happy.

They were really lucky that we put them in that bathroom.

I think Hurricane Andrew changed my life.

Now I know that hurricanes are extremely powerful, and they can destroy everything.

I think the photo became so famous because all of the other photos from Hurricane Andrew were very sad.

But the flamingos showed us that there is hope, even in really horrible situations.

And 8 of those flamingos are still alive more than 30 years later.

I think it shows that Miami is a really strong city, and hurricanes can’t destroy our spirit.

It’s a Miami thing.
