Episode 10: La chasseuse de la particule (The Particle Hunter)
Duolingo French Podcast
In the summer of 1982, Rajaâ Cherkaoui El Moursli was living in France.
She was 28 years old, had just finished a doctorate in nuclear physics, and had been offered a job in a lab in Grenoble.
She wanted to take the job.
But her father said “No.
Come back home to Morocco.”
»
“Morocco needs you” he said, with a certain patriotism that Rajaâ didn’t fully share at the time.
Rajaâ ended up going back to Morocco, and her decision would change Morocco’s place in the scientific world.
Rajaâ was born in Morocco in 1956, two years after Morocco had gained its independence from France.
One of six children, Rajaâ was loved and nurtured.
But becoming a nuclear scientist was not really in the cards for her.
Going to school was already a bit of a stretch.
Rajaâ’s father ran a small shop, and her mother could only read a bit, and only in Arabic.
But Rajaâ went to bilingual French-Moroccan schools and she was a prolific reader in French and in Arabic.
At school, Rajaâ found out she was also really good at math.
People around her realized it too.
When Rajaâ was finishing high school, her teachers encouraged her to continue her studies.
Her French teachers wanted her to go study in a French university.
Rajaâ pushed back.
French universities had more resources and were stronger academically.
Plus, studying in France would be free.
She pressed her father.
She got her mother involved.
But that didn’t work, so Rajaâ and her mother called up the wife of a cousin to come to the rescue.
»
Rajaâ thinks that what convinced her father was the cousin’s argument that Rajaâ needed to be responsible and self-sufficient, able to take care of herself.
When Rajaâ’s father came home that day, he handed her something.
»
It was 1975.
Rajaâ went to study in Grenoble, a city in the southeast of France, at the foot of the French Alps.
She had pre-registered for an architecture degree, and she went to fill in paperwork at the university orientation office.
»
Over the next seven years, Rajaâ worked her way towards a PhD—un doctorat—in Particle Physics, a branch of physics that tries to understand the fundamental building blocks that make up our universe: elementary particles, or particules élémentaires.
Rajaâ loved her work.
She also loved life in Grenoble, a student town that attracted people from all over the world.
By 1982, Rajaâ was married and working to finish her doctorate.
She specialized in creating detectors.
Her devices were used to find particles that other physicists had predicted were out there, but hadn’t yet found.
She conducted experiments—des expériences.
Rajaâ needed access to more powerful equipment than what was available in her laboratory.
So she looked to CERN, the European Nuclear Research Institute, in Geneva, Switzerland.
CERN is the largest nuclear physics laboratory in the world, and it was just next door.
For Rajaâ, CERN was a whole new world.
A giant campus, the size of 200 baseball fields, with streets and buildings, it was like a city within a city.
On devait sonner à chaque porte.
Rajaâ spent three months at CERN.
She made herself indispensable: she mastered the science, but she also knew how to run the hardware.
She had the right skillset.
By the time she finished her doctorate, she was offered a research job in Grenoble.
So Rajaâ and her husband had a choice to make: stay in France or move back to Morocco.
In 1982, Morocco was building new universities, and the country was actively recruiting Moroccan professors to replace the French colonial presence and Moroccanize the country.
Rajaâ agreed to return, reluctantly.
Cette nouvelle vie était difficile.
Tout était différent.
Quand on reste longtemps à l’étranger, on change.
Et quand on revient, on est différent.
Donc, au début, c’était dur.
Rajaâ was hired to teach nuclear physics at the university in Rabat.
But she missed doing research.
After a year of teaching, and settling into her new life back home in Morocco, she decided to reach out to her old colleagues in Europe.
They started doing research together.
At the time, CERN was starting to build a machine to understand the origin of the universe.
Physicists had a long-standing theory about how it all started.
Thirteen billion years ago, an explosion of energy and particles grew and expanded rapidly—creating all the matter in the universe.
They called this theory: the Big Bang.
Physicists lacked the evidence to explain how the universe went from a tiny dense weightless point to… well everything.
From the lightest gas to the heaviest metal.
So they did what physicists do.
They invented a theoretical particle, something that could explain how the other particles came to acquire weight, or mass, in the aftermath of the Big Bang.
Physicists called the particle the Higgs boson, le boson de Higgs, in honor of Peter Higgs’ theory.
To find the Higgs boson, scientists needed to recreate the conditions of the Big Bang.
So CERN set out to build the biggest machine ever made: the Large Hadron Collider—a giant underground tunnel 17 miles long.
In the Large Hadron Collider’s underground tunnel, CERN scientists would speed up particles close to the speed of light and make them crash into each other, the way particles did right after the Big Bang.
Back in Morocco, Rajaâ was eager to join the hunt for the Higgs boson.
Rajaâ made it her mission to make Morocco a CERN member state.
That would require a large amount of time, money and organization, and the green light from the Moroccan government.
She got a lucky break when the minister of higher education was replaced with someone she knew.
»
Rajaâ came to the meeting with a representative from CERN.
She was nervous, because the meeting would make or break the project.
Rajaâ argued her case like a lawyer.
The minister saw how the discoveries made at CERN could be an asset to Morocco.
Rajaâ now had to recruit colleagues.
Morocco had to pay to join CERN, and wouldn’t support just one or two scientists.
She needed a network—un réseau.
It took time to recruit the right people.
It took Rajaâ nearly a decade, but in 1996, Morocco joined CERN—the first state from the African continent to do so.
The Moroccans would be collaborating with some 2,000 scientists around the world.
Together they’d build a machine that would try to detect the Higgs boson.
Rajaâ’s team, however, had to deal with issues that others did not.
The Moroccan team brought all the devices they built to Switzerland to be tested.
So Rajaâ returned to CERN, nearly 15 years after she’d been there as a grad student.
It took ten years to build the machine.
Once it was up and running, it started producing massive amounts of data that had to be analyzed.
Looking for the Higgs boson was like searching for a needle in a haystack.
So for years Rajaâ traveled constantly between Morocco and Switzerland.
By 2011, 15 years after Morocco joined CERN, everyone working on the search for the Higgs boson realized they had found something.
It looked and acted just like the particle they were looking for.
But was this really it? At first it wasn’t clear, because there was so much data to sift through.
The analysis took another year—a year in which Rajaâ couldn’t tell anyone about the discovery.
CERN reserves the right to announce anything publicly.
So she had to keep quiet.
The theory had been proven.
And the discovery won the Nobel Prize for physics.
It was awarded to the living scientists who had predicted the existence of the Higgs boson back in 1964.
For Rajaâ, having her team mentioned on stage at the Nobel Ceremony… it was an extraordinary feeling.
It was a scientific accomplishment.
It was also a major recognition for Morocco, which she had worked so hard to involve in the discovery.
On m’appelait au téléphone, et on me disait « Hamdullah ».
Cela veut dire « Dieu merci » en arabe.
« Hamdullah ».
Rajaâ continues to do research with CERN and teach at Mohammed V University in Rabat, Morocco, where she served as Vice President for four years.
She is a member of the Moroccan Academy of Sciences.
But she has a new priority now, empowering young Moroccans—especially women—to do research and pursue their doctorates.
