Episode 28: Le nom caché (The Hidden Name)

Duolingo French Podcast

Growing up, Damien Bouché always felt that there was something strange about his father’s side of the family.

On his mother’s side, there were big gatherings and endless stories.

But all Damien knew about his paternal grandfather, Pierre-Jean Bouché, was that he’d grown up on the French island of Corsica, la Corse, and that he had no stories to tell.

In 2001, when he was 22, Damien lost both of his paternal grandparents.

He’d never been close to them, but he went to help his dad with the difficult task of emptying their apartment in Paris.

It was a mess.

Damien noticed a document his father had just left on a chest of drawers by the door.

It was his grandfather’s death certificate, son certificat de décès.

Damien started reading it.

Damien stared at the certificate trying to make sense of it.

His grandfather had been born in 1925, in Vienna, Austria, not in Corsica, like he’d always said.

Damien re-read the names of his grandfather’s parents.

First he saw the name of his great-grandfather, son arrière-grand-père.

Damien stared at his great-grandmother’s maiden name, Goldblatt.

His grandfather’s true name, Landesmann, Peter-Hans Landesmann.

These were Jewish names, but from what Damien knew, his family wasn’t Jewish.

Suddenly, the mystery that had always surrounded his grandfather took on a whole different meaning.

When Damien read the Jewish names of his great-grandparents on his grandfather’s death certificate, something clicked.

The awkward silences, the lack of family members, all of a sudden, they made a lot more sense.

C’était la pièce manquante du puzzle.

Damien’s father told him that he had just found the certificate.

They were both stunned by the discovery.

Damien’s grandfather had never talked about Austria.

Then, Damien’s father led Damien to a utility closet.

Inside, there was an old leather suitcase.

Damien stared at the photos.

Then he picked up l’agenda, the appointment book.

It was his great-grandmother’s from 1943.

Next to the dates, there were troubling national holidays, printed in like “Hitler’s birthday,” and “Invasion of France.”

Damien took in his great-grandmother’s last and final entry in her appointment book.

He took in this new name, this new family history.

He was shaken.

Damien wanted to recover the stories and the roots, les racines, that had been taken from him.

He wanted to look at every picture, every letter, and retrace his grandfather’s steps, from his birth in Vienna in 1925 to his death in Paris.

As the now self-appointed family historian, Damien went through the contents of the suitcase and pored over the documents.

One of the oldest documents he found was a report card from a Jewish school in Vienna.

The report was for Peter-Hans Landesmann.

Next, Damien read letters his great-grandmother, Hilda Goldblatt, had written to her son Peter-Hans in 1940.

They’d been mailed to an orphanage in France, and they clarified what had happened to Peter-Hans at the beginning of the war, after the Nazis, les nazis, annexed Austria.

Damien was overwhelmed to find out Hilda had sent away her 13-year-old son, Damien’s grandfather, to protect him so early on in the war.

She must have sensed something ugly was coming.

Hilda had wanted her son to escape to America.

Instead, Peter-Hans ended up in an orphanage in the south of France.

In 1941, when he turned 16, Peter-Hans took off and became un résistant, a member of la Résistance, the underground movement to free France from Nazi occupation.

First, Peter-Hans worked as a translator.

Then he fought.

Damien soon figured out these glowing letters were recommendation letters.

He guessed his grandfather had used them to apply for French citizenship after the war.

And sure enough, the next piece of the puzzle Damien discovered was a passport.

In 1945, Damien’s grandfather was only 20 years old.

Barely two years younger than Damien was now.

Damien felt something had been taken from his grandfather, and he knew what he wanted to do: change his name back to Landesmann.

It was the name Damien should have been born with.

So he went to City Hall, la mairie.

But the city hall clerk told Damien that French law only allowed three instances where you could change your name.

First, if you were taking your spouse’s name.

Second, if your name was considered pejorative.

And third, if you had a non-French name, and wanted to adopt a name that “sounded French,” un nom à consonance française.

Damien’s request didn’t fit any of these categories.

But Damien decided there was something else he could do to connect to his family’s history.

He would go to Vienna and uncover his family’s past.

In Vienna, Damien searched through records at the national archives.

He learned that his grandfather’s father had died young, and that his grandfather’s mother, Hilda, had remarried when Peter-Hans was a child.

To a Christian man.

He also found out Hilda had been arrested in 1943.

Right when the writing in her appointment book stopped.

Apprendre ça, ça m’a bouleversé.

As Damien took in his great-grandmother’s death in Auschwitz, he discovered something else: that Hilda had a tombstone in Vienna’s main cemetery.

That was odd.

People who had died in concentration camps didn’t usually have tombstones with their names.

But someone had set one up for Hilda.

Damien decided to see the tomb for himself.

On his last day in Vienna, he bought a red rose and took the tramway to the cemetery.

It was already late in the afternoon when he arrived.

Everything was dark, and snow was slowly falling on the graves.

Damien set out to find Hilda’s tomb.

The guard warned him that the cemetery was about to close, but Damien couldn’t give up.

Suddenly, he noticed an odd headstone, une pierre tombale.

It was in the cemetery’s Jewish area, but it had a Christian cross on it.

Damien read the name: “Hilda Goldblatt.” The date of birth matched.

It had to be her.

Damien fell to his knees.

Damien laid the rose down on the tomb, then he made his way towards the exit.

He felt incredibly calm, like something had quieted down inside him.

Several years went by, and Damien kept thinking about changing his name.

He contacted a lawyer, who told him it was a longshot.

But then in 2008, Damien created an account on a brand new social network: Facebook.

Damien also used the Internet to continue his quest to uncover the family history that his grandfather had never shared.

He posted messages on forums dedicated to genealogy, hoping to find someone who had known his grandfather.

And then one day, he got a message back from a man named Walter Reed.

A few months later, Damien traveled to the southwest of France to meet Walter Reed and attend a ceremony honoring the orphanage where Walter and Damien’s grandfather had hidden during the war.

Damien was the only person in his twenties in the room.

Everyone looked at him, intrigued.

Someone asked who he was.

Peter, they told him, cut all ties with them after the war.

He never wrote or answered any letters.

No one knew what had happened to him.

But they all remembered him.

Damien took in the moment.

These people had lived through the same traumas as his grandfather.

But in that moment, they seemed to have found a way to heal their scars, cicatriser.

They were open about what had happened to them during the war.

After his trip to the south of France, Damien found out about a collective called La Force du nom, “The strength of the name”.

The collective sought to change French law so that the descendents of Jewish people could reclaim their family names.

Damien decided to join.

Damien applied with the collective.

He’d just gotten married, and he wanted to come to terms with his past, so that he and his partner could have a solid foundation before having their own children.

It took four years for Damien to get an answer.

Then finally, one day, he received a call from his lawyer.

The government had approved his request.

Damien Bouché was now, officially, Damien Landesmann.

At first, it felt unreal.

When Damien received his new identity card in 2013, he felt he’d repaired the great chain that connects him to his ancestors.

He was the last link, le dernier maillon.

He had become Damien Landesmann just in time.

A few months later, he would be able to pass his name–his family’s name–onto his newborn son.

Adam Landesmann.

Le premier homme.

Damien Landesmann lives in Paris with his partner and their three children, Adam, Hugo and Johanna.
