Episode 30: Les santons de Noël (The Little Christmas Figures)

Duolingo French Podcast

A quick word before we begin: this story contains a spoiler about a certain important Christmas character who flies around on his sled.

If you’re listening with young children, be warned!

As a small child in the south of France, Martine Gaussen loved a lot of things about Christmas.

But her favorite thing by far were the stories.

Martine sat by the record player, listening to the story of Christmas told in the sing-songy southern French accent.

To her, all the characters in the story were as real as the people in the room.

She loved listening to the tales of characters in the nativity scene, or as these characters are known in France, les santons.

Apart from the talking donkey and the ox, le bœuf, there was, of course, another important Christmas character Martine liked to imagine on these adventures: Santa Claus, le Père Noël.

Martine loved to think of him flying around the world in his sled, son traîneau.

At home, Martine’s mom kept the magic of Christmas alive, and Martine let her imagination run free.

But at school, some of the other kids began saying that Santa Claus didn’t exist.

Martine refused to believe them.

When she turned nine, she realized none of the other kids believed in Santa.

Coming back from school, she told her mom.

That was the day Martine found out that Santa Claus didn’t exist.

She was stunned.

What would life be without the joy she had felt imagining all the Christmas adventures of the characters she loved? She felt that something magical had been taken away from her and wondered how to bring it back.

Every episode, we bring you fascinating true stories to help you improve your French listening and gain new perspectives on the world.

Martine was born in Nice, a coastal city wedged between the Italian border and the French region of Provence.

Christmas traditions there reflected both the region’s Catholic roots and its Mediterranean farming background, with staple crops like wheat and lentils, les lentilles.

There were lots of other regional Christmas traditions that Martine’s family observed.

For example, they always left an empty seat at the Christmas table — in case a poor, weary traveler knocked on their door.

But if someone had showed up, they would have been treated to the region’s traditional Christmas Eve dinner.

In Provence, it’s a meal that involves thirteen desserts.

Most of them are little portions of dried fruits, like figs, dates and raisins…but still: thirteen!

With the nougats also came brioche dipped in orange water.

But for little Martine, the tradition that sparked her imagination the most was la crèche de Noël, the Christmas nativity scene.

In Martine’s house, her mother’s nativity scenes were something special.

In the forest, Martine and her family would collect little things that struck them as beautiful: pretty branches, strips of bark, pine cones, stones with green moss on them… Afterwards, they brought their treasures home.

The word means “little saints” in old Provençal.

In today’s French, it describes the little clay characters, des personnages en terre cuite, you find in nativity sets.

In French Provence, nearly every family that celebrates Christmas has one.

Martine’s family santons were passed down from her maternal grandmother.

“You can look, but don’t touch.” That was a really hard rule for little Martine to follow.

But the santons were extremely fragile.

So Martine admired them from afar and imagined their secret lives.

Families from the south of France, especially Provence, don’t just include the characters from the Bible story in their nativity sets.

There are dozens of other characters, all members of a traditional Provençal village.

People add new characters to their set every year.

Some collect hundreds of santons throughout their lifetime.

Martine’s father was in the military, so for a lot of her childhood, her family went back and forth, between Nice and foreign postings.

Everywhere they went, their Christmas traditions and their precious santons followed.

By the time Martine returned to Nice as a teenager, the family collection of santons had grown, and by then she’d discovered a new way to use her imagination: painting.

J’ai appris à peindre pendant mes voyages.

The city of Nice is on the French Riviera and has lots of beaches.

But instead of sand, they’re covered in the kind of smooth, grey stones often found near rocky coastlines and rivers.

The French call these stones: “des galets.” At 17, Martine collected unusual stones.

Maybe she could paint them.

Cela me rendait très heureuse.

Martine started turning stones into little characters whenever she had a chance.

At first it was mostly animals.

But one day, she picked up a stone with a slight curve.

As she looked at it, she imagined an old grandpa stooped over his cane.

She took the stone home and painted the grandpa that night.

Martine wanted her imaginary characters to come to life.

She dreamed of going to art school and becoming a children’s book illustrator.

She also got married, and during her second year of art school, became pregnant.

When her son was born, she faced a difficult decision.

At first, Martine was able to combine starting a family with her creative work.

Her husband earned the family’s main income, but she contributed financially by giving part-time drawing lessons to children and adults.

She continued to paint in her spare time.

But then, when her son was just four years old, the situation changed.

Martine was now on her own, with a child to support.

She took a full-time job teaching French in a continuing education center.

Her life revolved around her son, and her work.

She was good at her job, but she felt worlds away from the creative pursuits that had once brought her so much joy.

Martine had financial stability, she owned her house, but she had little room in her life for stories and art.

When Christmastime came around, she would still put up a nativity set with her son.

But it was very bare-boned — a far cry from the magical, whimsical nativity sets her mother used to create.

Eight years later, Martine was happily remarried and lived with her husband and two sons in a beautiful Provençal village called Tourrettes-sur-Loup.

Tucked away in verdant hills and lined with cobblestone streets, it looked plucked straight out of a fairy tale…or a Provençal nativity set.

Martine loved it.

When Martine turned 40, her mother passed away.

It was unexpected and Martine missed her terribly.

Ma mère me manquait terriblement.

That same year, Martine lost two other people she was close to, to cancer.

The back-to-back losses shook her.

Martine made a decision.

For the first time in her adult life, she would put art and imagination at the center of her world.

She decided to quit her job, and put off her retirement, sa retraite, in order to open her own atelier-boutique, a storefront that doubled as a workshop.

The only person who fully supported Martine’s dream of opening an art store was her husband, Roger.

With his help, Martine put her plan into action.

She gave her notice at work and she set up her atelier-boutique on a charming street in the old medieval center of Tourrettes-sur-Loup.

And of course, she started painting.

Martine called her shop “La vie en douce,” a pun meaning both “the sweet life” and “secret life.”

When Martine wasn’t painting, she went hunting for large, smooth river stones.

She and Roger would travel to rivers all around the region, and Martine would spend hours wading up and down the banks, tracking down the most beautiful and interesting-shaped galets she could find.

One day, Martine was hunting galets as usual when she noticed a very long, smooth, pale stone, standing upright.

For some reason, it immediately made her think of the Joseph figurine in a nativity scene.

Martine started making lots of santons.

Roger would help her by sawing off the bottom of the stones to make them stand upright, and she would paint bright, expressive characters on each one — both the traditional nativity scene cast, and all sorts of new characters, inspired by the France around her and her travels.

What gave Martine the most joy was to see kids’ reactions to her santons.

They would stare at them, wide-eyed, then tentatively poke at one.

“Go ahead, you can touch.

They won’t break!” Martine would say, and soon enough, the kid would have a santon in each hand, playing make-believe.

One day, Martine was invited to display her santons at a big Christmas fair, une foire, in a neighboring region.

When she arrived at the fair, Martine set up her little booth.

Around her, Christmas lights twinkled and the scent of hot mulled wine filled the air.

All of the other artisans were traditional santons makers, santonniers.

Martine didn’t care if some people thought her santons were unusual.

They brought a smile to most faces, and that’s what mattered.

Today, at 68, Martine has retired from her little village shop.

But every year, come Christmas, she goes out into the forest and gathers pine cones and pieces of bark to decorate her crèche de Noël, just like her mother did.

Martine has grandchildren now.

The youngest is seven.

Even though Martine still has her grandmother’s nativity set, she leaves it carefully wrapped and stored, out of harm’s way.

She wants her grandchildren to be able to enjoy the magic of Christmas the same way she did as a child…only more hands-on!
