Episode 36: Les rebelles écolos (The Eco Rebels)

Duolingo French Podcast

In 2014, Benji Spano was a 27-year-old man living in Roubaix, a working-class town in the north of France, and he was at his wits’ end.

He’d lost his job in the financial crash of 2008 and since then, he’d gone from gig to gig trying to earn a living.

Benji lived with his girlfriend, Marie.

They were both unemployed but they knew what they wanted: a home, steady and meaningful jobs, and a bit of time to spare.

Yet none of that seemed within reach.

J’avais l’impression qu’un futur heureux était impossible.

Benji wanted to work hard, if it could lead to happiness.

But to him, there was something broken about a system that asked people to work hard without the promise of long-term security.

At every family gathering, in every conversation with friends, he’d ask: “Is there a different way to live?”

One evening, Benji and Marie had a friend over, Julie.

That night, like he so often did, Benji wondered if there was a way to live a more meaningful life.

And that’s when Julie asked Benji, “Have you ever heard of Notre-Dame-des-Landes?”

Julie described the community to Benji and Marie as a sort of experimental utopia that had morphed into a self-sufficient and self-managed society.

Benji and Marie were intrigued.

So they asked Julie to take them to Notre-Dame-des-Landes… Just to check it out.

But what they would find there would revolutionize their lives.

Bienvenue and welcome to the Duolingo French Podcast.

In the summer of 2014, Benji, Marie and Julie drove together to Notre-Dame-des-Landes.

During the seven-hour drive, Julie told them more about the place, and how this unlikely community had begun.

Benji loved imagining this wilderness and its wild bird species, des espèces…but the French government saw a different value to the land.

In 2000, they decided to begin building an airport there.

They drew plans to lay concrete over the wetlands and sent letters to local farmers informing them that the land around them…and their homes…were going to be seized.

Farmers and environmentalists opposed the airport, and many locals sided with them.

They argued that there was already an airport in the area, a mere half hour away.

Why did so many homes, so many habitats have to be destroyed? So a group of people came together and decided to stop the project.

By occupying the land.

By the time Benji and Marie decided to check out Notre-Dame-des-Landes, this had been going on for eight years.

The police would come and force people away, and people would come back to block the airport construction.

Not just locals who had had houses in the area, but others, who came to protest the airport and never left.

And so began the social experiment.

People started living on the land in abandoned homes or in sheds they built.

And Notre-Dame-des-Landes became une zone à défendre, an “area to defend” — ZAD for short.

By 2014, when Benji and Marie were on their way to visit, roughly 300 people lived on the land.

They called themselves les “zadistes”.

On the drive, Benji took in all this information, and realized they were headed right into a conflict zone.

As the sun was setting, Benji braced himself.

Soon the only light was the car’s headlights, les phares.

Finally, Benji caught his first glimpse of the ZAD: barricades.

Benji looked past the piles of tires and burned cars, trying to make out the area.

He noticed small buildings along the sides of the roads.

Strange-looking little sheds, des cabanes, and trailers, des caravanes.

They zigzagged between the barricades in the darkness, for another 20 minutes.

The ZAD seemed to stretch on for miles.

Finally, they stopped in front of an old stone farmhouse.

Benji didn’t know what to expect, but they went in.

Everybody cheered and told Benji, Marie and Julie to come take a seat.

It seemed completely normal to them that three people would show up in the middle of the night.

Julie had plans to meet friends living on the ZAD, but Benji and Marie told the people they were looking for a way to lead a better life, and hoped to stick around for ten days to understand how the ZAD worked.

They were offered a bed in a large dorm room, and told they could stay.

Benji and Marie started pitching in with the farm work right away.

The zadistes explained to Benji that they were organizing into a self-sufficient, self-managed society with no leaders and their own system of government.

Benji attended a meeting to see what this self-managed community meant in practice.

There was a lot of yelling.

Benji was in awe.

For ten days, he and Marie soaked in the revolutionary spirit of the place, its idealism, its fierce independence, and its solidarity… They felt the ZAD could offer them all the things that they were missing from their life back home.

So they decided to see if they could live the dream in the ZAD, full time.

A few months later, Benji and Marie moved to Notre-Dame-des-Landes full time.

It was their own social experiment.

They wanted to find out if they could lead better lives in the utopia known as la ZAD.

They brought a big tent with them, then they got to work.

Three days a week, Benji and Marie milked the goats and carried the milk back to the dairy, where it was turned into cheese.

Benji and Marie found a plot of land where they could build a shed that would serve as their home.

It was halfway between the two farms where they worked, and next to a new fruit orchard, un verger, that had just been replanted by the community.

On pouvait commencer à construire notre cabane.

Benji and Marie set up their tent on the plot of land, and started figuring out how to build a cabin…from scratch.

First, they had to draw some plans.

They weren’t really sure what they were doing, so they asked a friend who was a carpenter, un charpentier, for some advice.

Next, they had to gather supplies.

They collected rocks, scavenged abandoned structures for doors and windows… Some neighbors even brought them wood beams.

It took time to find and bring everything to the plot of land.

But every step of the way, Benji and Marie found people to help.

After six months of hard work, Benji and Marie could finally relax in their own cabane.

It was bigger and more comfortable than anywhere they’d ever lived.

Winter was coming to an end and a warm spring sun shone on their terrace.

Now that the cabin was finished, Benji wanted to shift his focus to fighting for causes he believed in.

It was why he’d come to the ZAD: to have time for the things he cared about.

An international environmental summit was soon coming up in Paris, but to Benji, this kind of summit was really just for show.

Benji wanted to organize something that would let people know real change was possible.

That you could think about the environment and land differently.

Like they did in the ZAD.

He worried that when outsiders learned about the ZAD, they just saw hooligans…and they missed out on the big picture.

So Benji joined the community to brainstorm what action they could take to make people see the zadistes for what they were: French citizens trying to build a better system, a better way to lead a meaningful life.

Benji thought about what they could do.

They wanted to be seen, but Notre-Dame-des-Landes was 400 kilometers from the capital.

So the zadistes came up with an idea: They would ride bikes and drive tractors from the ZAD to Paris.

The journey would take them eight days.

And along the road, they would stop in villages and towns to spend the night and meet people.

Their goal was to draw attention to the problem of the airport, and organize a kind of road show, to educate people throughout France about life in the ZAD.

And so on November 21st, 2015, while heads of state were gathering in the capital for a climate summit, 200 bikes and 5 tractors left the ZAD.

They were headed for Paris.

On avait prévu plusieurs arrêts.

At night, Benji and his fellow protestors stayed in villages.

They held town hall-style meetings.

A lot of people came, curious about what exactly was going on in the ZAD.

Some even joined the caravan of tractors and bicycles.

Benji felt excited to see the turn-out.

But when they reached the outskirts of Paris, they found out the police were planning to prevent them from entering the city.

The zadistes didn’t want a big public confrontation: They’d already had plenty of those in the ZAD.

Benji and the other organizers decided to march onto the castle of Versailles, where the king of France had once lived, before the French Revolution.

They would ride down the main avenue leading straight to the castle.

With their tractors, their bikes and the people who had joined them on foot for the last leg of the trip.

There were two squadrons of policemen, roughly 150 people, guarding the entrance to Versailles.

The zadistes began running towards the castle, stopping just outside the gates, les grilles.

Things were getting tense.

But Benji and the rest of the organizers soon realized they had the upper hand.

French people have a long tradition of taking to the streets to make a point.

So the protestors stood their ground, peacefully, and did what they had come to do…

To the shock of the police and the journalists who had come to cover the protest, Benji and his fellow zadistes proceeded to have…a picnic.

C’était notre projet depuis le début : marcher, protester, montrer qu’on existait, qu’on résistait, qu’on allait défendre Notre-Dame-des-Landes contre l'aéroport.

They had made it.

Not to Paris, but to a place that was even more symbolic in the French imagination.

Benji felt ecstatic.

J’avais l’impression d’avoir accompli quelque chose, d’avoir défendu mes idées.

In 2018, the French government decided to abandon the airport project.

Now, the zadistes are trying to secure the rights to continue making a life on the ZAD.
