Episode 39: Lausanne, mon amour (Lausanne, My Love)
Duolingo French Podcast
It’s April 1975, and 15-year-old Renato Häusler stands at a street corner of his hometown, a suburb, une banlieue, of Lausanne, in Switzerland.
Renato looks at the construction sites, les chantiers.
His neighborhood is booming.
And Renato hates that.
Renato looks up at the sky.
He watches for the arrival of swallows, des hirondelles.
When he was a boy, every spring the migratory birds would fill the sky above Lausanne.
They would fly over Lake Geneva, skirting the snowy Alpine peaks, and settle on the three hills that make up the city.
From his Lausanne suburb, Renato worries about society’s relentless push for expansion and productivity.
It makes him feel out of place.
He longs for a slower, simpler time…and he wonders what the future has in store for him.

Today’s destination: Lausanne, Switzerland.
In 1978, Renato Häusler turned 18 and faced his first big test as a member of Swiss society.
Switzerland is a neutral country, but it’s mandatory for every male citizen between the ages of 18 and 50 to serve in the country’s militia.
For the next four years, Renato was expected to dedicate some time every year to military training.
La première formation militaire durait quatre mois.
Puis, trois semaines par an jusqu’à mes 28 ans.
In 1981, Renato took a stand.
He became a conscientious objector, opposed to participating in the country’s militia.
Back then, in the 1980s, or as they say in Lausanne, les années huitantes, this meant having to stand trial in front of a military tribunal.
And possibly going to jail.
Renato was sentenced to spend four months in a Swiss jail for nonviolent offenders.
The old prison building was at the foot of Lausanne’s cathedral, on a hill called la colline de la Cité.
It’s one of the oldest parts of Lausanne — not a part of town Renato usually spent much time in.
But now he was stuck there.
Through the prison bars, les barreaux, Renato listened to the noise of the city.
That first night, Renato lay down on his cot.
As the clock struck ten, the cathedral bell began to chime, slow and deep.
After the tenth chime, there was a silence.
Then…
C’est le guet…
…Renato heard a voice…
Il a sonné dix !
…floating into the cell from above…
Le guet.
The watchman.
Renato’s cell-mates explained that there was a night watchman in the cathedral tower.
Every night, it was his job to call the time on the hour from 10 p.m.
to 2 a.m.
A watchman had done this every single night since the year 1405.
In the olden days, le guet was on fire-watch as the city slept.
But now, it was just tradition, a relic from the past.
When he finished his sentence, Renato got a job as a teaching assistant at a private school.
And that gave him the chance to find out more about this mysterious guet.
Schools were allowed to visit the watchman in his lodgings, sa loge.
So one day, Renato volunteered to take a group of schoolchildren there.
The loge was nestled underneath the cathedral’s rafters.
Centuries-old oak beams framed a small chamber with a twin bed, a wardrobe, a desk and a chair.
Nothing but the bare essentials.
There wasn’t even running water.
To Renato, the tiny watchman’s chamber seemed like a perfect, peaceful hideaway: timeless, hors du temps.
Both right at the heart of the city yet removed from the frenzy of modern life.
He so wished he could stay there.
Ce métier me fascinait.
Renato felt like he’d gotten a glimpse of his dream job…and it was already taken.
Soon, he had to climb down the stairs with his students and go back to modern life.
After that, he continued to struggle to find his place in the city.
Five years passed.
Renato kept going from job to job.
Then, in 1987, he heard through a friend that the city was recruiting people to cover for the watchman on his nights off.
He volunteered straight away.
Five months later, the full time guet needed a night off.
And Renato got the call.
Renato flipped the switch and turned on the light.
He stared at the winding stone staircase and the solid wood beams, les poutres, framing each floor.
He climbed 153 steps, and stepped into the loge.
Inside, it was absolutely still.
The only sounds came from the ancient wood creaking under Renato’s feet.
The intimate loge opened onto a grand stone balcony… The balcony wrapped along each side of the cathedral’s tower — north, south, east, west.
Renato gazed at the city sleeping below.
Le Léman, known in English as Lake Geneva, is the largest lake in Western Europe.
Its crescent-shaped shore spreads to the south of Lausanne, with clear, placid waters reflecting the snowy peaks beyond.
From his tower, Renato had a perfect view of the lake.
Renato had lived in Lausanne his whole life, but that night, from the top of the tower, Lausanne took on a whole new beauty.
As he stared at the night lights, the city seemed to exist outside of time.
After that first night, Renato volunteered to fill in for the watchman as often as he could.
He got to go about once a month.
Every night that Renato spent in the tower, he fell more deeply in love with Lausanne.
He loved the private little nook where he watched over the city.
Renato longed to be there every night.
But he couldn’t.
He was just a volunteer, filling in when the guet was off-duty.
By 2001, Renato had been a replacement night watchman for 14 long years.
He had a good life: He’d finally found a fulfilling job working at an institute for the blind.
He had a lovely wife and two young daughters.
Occasionally he spent a night watching over his beloved Lausanne.
He wasn’t unhappy, but something still felt…off.
One day, Renato finally got the news he’d been waiting for: The full-time watchman was retiring.
The city put out an open call to find his replacement, and Renato jumped at the chance to apply.
But, so did 52 other candidates.
Renato waited anxiously for a response from the city.
Being the guet was the thing that made him feel most connected to Lausanne, the most “at home” in the modern world.
Finally, after two weeks that felt like forever, Renato got the call.
Out of 52 candidates, the city had picked him! He would be the next full-time guet de Lausanne.
Being guet full-time meant that Renato was at the tower five nights a week.
He kept his day job at the institute for the blind, but arranged to work mostly afternoon shifts.
In the evening, he had dinner with his family, then got his daughters ready for bed.
After kissing his wife goodnight, he’d take off to be at the tower in time for his 10 p.m.
call.
Renato took the tradition of guet de Lausanne very seriously.
He’d always thought that the previous watchman didn’t quite give his hourly calls the ceremony and weight they deserved.
So he looked for ways to celebrate his role in the city.
To make himself more distinctive and visible to the people below, Renato did a bit of historical research.
He came up with his own special guet uniform: a large, broad-rimmed black felt hat, and an antique gas lantern.
Having renewed the tradition of the hat, Renato developed a new ritual of his own.
To this day, right before making his rounds, sa ronde, Renato puts on his hat and heads out to the balcony.
Then he lights the flame in his lantern and holds it up above the ledge.
Renato always stops at each of the cardinal points on the tower to repeat his hourly call.
He saves his favorite view, towards the south and the lake, for last.
As the weeks turned into months, and then years, Renato’s love for the guet, the cathedral, and his hometown of Lausanne only deepened.
By becoming a man outside of time, he’d finally found his place in his city.
Renato Häusler is one of Europe’s last remaining night watchmen.
He lives in Lausanne, Switzerland with his wife, Kala.
His nights spent roaming the cathedral with his lantern inspired him to start a business that suits his sense of timelessness: lighting concerts and other events by intimate candle-light.
It’s called Kalalumen, time and light.
