Episode 43: Une visite guidée du Paris noir (A Tour of Black Paris)

Duolingo French Podcast

Hey listeners, I’m Ngofeen Mputubwele, host of the Duolingo French Podcast, and today, we’re doing something a little bit different…

Bonjour Ngofeen ! Bonjour tout le monde !

Bonjour Kévi! We’re going to take you on a walking tour through Paris with a real Parisian tour guide, Kévi Donat.

Only this isn’t your typical tour of the City of Lights: Kévi is going to help us discover Paris in a new way.

Kévi has developed a tour he calls “le Paris noir” — “Black Paris.” In the first half of the 20th century, Paris was a center of artistic and intellectual Black life, not just for Black Parisians, but also for Black people from Africa, the Caribbean, and the United States.

Together, these artists and writers contributed to the rich history of the Paris we know and love today.

Today’s tour has been designed so that you can listen at home — or, the next time you find yourself in Paris, you can go on the tour in person! You’ll just need to pause the audio when you hear the chime, to give yourself time to walk from one spot to the next.

If you’re listening at home, you can follow along with the Google map we put together for you in the show notes.

Now, wherever you are, put in your earbuds, and let’s join Kévi at our first stop: the Pantheon, a massive historical monument located in Paris’s 5th arrondissement, at la Place du Panthéon.

Suivez-moi…

We start today’s tour on the left bank of Paris, in le Quartier latin — the Latin Quarter — a neighborhood known for its student life and cafés.

With its narrow, winding streets, le Quartier latin is one of the oldest areas in Paris.

Right here, in the middle of the square, is a cream-colored stone building: the Pantheon, le Panthéon.

The Pantheon is very grand and very imposing.

It’s here that Kévi first came up with the idea for a tour of the Black history of Paris.

We’ll get to that in a minute — but first, a quick history of the building itself.

The Pantheon has five columns in front, and on the top is a metal dome with a cross.

It kind of looks like a church, because when King Louis XV first ordered its construction in the year 1758, that’s what it was meant to be.

“To our great men, a grateful nation.” That’s what’s inscribed on the facade because by the time construction was finished on the Pantheon, France had undergone…the French Revolution! King Louis XV’s grandson, Louis XVI, had gone to the guillotine, and the new leaders in charge decided to turn the church into a mausoleum, where France could honor its national heroes.

Aujourd’hui, 80 personnes reposent là-bas.

Kévi first came up with his idea for a Paris noir tour in 2011, back when he first started as a tour guide.

That was the year a great Frenchman was laid to rest in the Pantheon: Aimé Césaire, a Black writer, un écrivain, from the French Caribbean island of Martinique.

In celebration of his life, a picture of Aimé Césaire was displayed on the facade of the Pantheon.

One day, while Kévi was giving a tour of the Pantheon, an American tourist looked at the picture of Aimé Césaire and asked Kévi: “Who’s this African American on the façade?”

Kévi explained that Aimé Césaire was a French writer and politician from Martinique and that Césaire had played a crucial role in defining what being Black meant to his generation.

He had coined the term “la négritude,” a word that became the name of a cultural movement meant to promote Black pride and self-determination.

That day, the woman’s mistake gave Kévi an idea.

There are four other important Black Frenchmen buried inside the Pantheon.

Among them is Alexandre Dumas, the author of the Three Musketeers — one of the most celebrated works of French literature.

Today we’ll be meeting other Black intellectuals whose great works have also contributed to the history of Paris.

But first, let’s go to the left, and around, to the back of the Pantheon.

This street shares the same name as the hill that we’re standing on: Montagne Sainte-Geneviève.

In Catholic tradition, Sainte Geneviève is the patron saint of Paris and she watches over the city.

She is said to have helped protect Paris when Germanic tribes, des tribus, laid siege to the city in the 5th century AD.

Sainte Geneviève also helped a young chieftain named Clovis become the first king of the Franks — the tribe that settled near Paris after the fall of the Roman Empire.

France takes its name from this tribe, and Clovis is the one who decided to make Paris the capital of his kingdom.

He gave the city its name.

We’re now going to walk to our next destination: a bookstore called Présence Africaine.

It’s located at the bottom of the hill, so continue down la rue de la Montagne Sainte-Geneviève until you reach a busier and larger street named la rue des Écoles.

You’ll find Présence Africaine located next to a hardware store with a red facade.

That logo, a man with three pairs of arms sticking out of his body, comes from a type of African mask, called a Kanaga mask.

It originated in Mali, a francophone country that was once colonized by France.

But Présence Africaine isn’t only a bookstore.

It’s also a legendary journal and a publishing house, une maison d’édition.

Alioune Diop founded Présence Africaine in 1949 because he wanted Black people around the world to tell their own story and come together to figure out what it meant to be part of a larger Black community.

In 1956, he organized the first International Congress of Black Writers and Artists.

Famous American writers like James Baldwin and Richard Wright were at that first congress, along with Aimé Cesaire and the poet Leopold Senghor.

But this wasn’t just a literary movement.

It was a political meeting taking place in the midst of independence movements, with African nations seeking independence from colonial France.

Take a few minutes to explore the bookstore before we head out to our next stop: France’s most famous university: la Sorbonne! To get there, take a left when you exit the bookstore and keep going straight down the rue des Écoles, then take another left on the rue de la Sorbonne.

We’ll meet in the square in front of the university.

It’s called la place de la Sorbonne, and it’s about a 7-minute walk.

We are now at our next stop, place de la Sorbonne, the cobblestoned square in front of France’s most iconic university.

The square is lined with tall linden trees, surrounding two fountains.

And underneath these trees, there are cafés.

It’s really nice to have a cold drink here in the summer…

The Sorbonne was founded in the year 1253 and is one of the world’s very first universities.

But the original buildings were destroyed.

What we see today, the chapel as well as the rest, date back to the 17th century.

Close your eyes for a moment, and picture yourself in the year 1920.

Men wear hats and three-piece suits.

Women’s corsets just went out of style and Parisian women are wearing straight dresses that stop right below the knee.

In the streets, you have those old cars with long hoods driving up and down the boulevard Saint-Michel… And standing right here in front of the Sorbonne, there’s 24-year-old Paulette Nardal.

Paulette arrived from Martinique to attend la Sorbonne.

She was one of the first Black women to study there.

At the time, France was discovering American jazz, Caribbean music and dances…and Paris’s biggest and hottest star was another Black woman: Josephine Baker.

“Une conscience noire,” or a “Black consciousness” was a big part of that cultural movement we discussed earlier: la négritude.

As a young student, Paulette was hungry to live the life of a Parisian intellectual.

So together with two of her sisters, Jane and Andrée, Paulette did what French intellectuals do: She opened a literary salon, un salon.

Paulette Nardal and her sisters had a goal: They wanted the different Black communities that lived in Paris to meet, to interact.

Their goal was to get the Black diaspora to get to know one another and recognize the common experiences they shared.

With colonies around the world, Paris was already a multicultural and cosmopolitan city in the 1920s.

So picture Paulette Nardal’s salon… There’s a Senegalese student who got a prestigious scholarship to study at the Sorbonne, chatting with a Black American who’s newly arrived in Paris with news of the Harlem Renaissance.

They share a drink with an upper-middle class student from Martinique, who’s chatting with someone from Ivory Coast!

The 1920s is when Paris really became a Black intellectual and artistic center.

And it’s thanks to Paulette Nardal, her salon, and her forward-thinking ideas about race and transnational communities, that people like Aimé Césaire and Alioune Diop developed their ideas.

If admitted to the Pantheon, Paulette would be the sixth woman there, and the first Black woman.

We’re going to leave the Sorbonne behind now, and head to our next stop: the French Senate.

But first, there’s something uniquely Parisian that I want to point out along the way! If we head west across la place de la Sorbonne, we’ll find ourselves on le boulevard Saint-Michel.

Let’s cross this street, and start walking straight ahead down la rue de Vaugirard.

That green column on the street corner to our right is called a Morris column.

There are a lot of them around Paris.

They date back from the second half of the 19th century.

They are where theaters put up colorful posters to advertise their latest shows.

Take a peek to see what’s playing this week, and then let’s keep going straight on la rue de Vaugirard.

We’re going to take this all the way to our next stop: the French Senate! It’s about a 5-minute walk.

Bienvenue au Sénat, notre quatrième arrêt.

Let’s step back and admire the back of le palais du Sénat, the French Senate, a low building with a tower-like entrance, and a grand dome, with a French flag at the top.

This is where two of the historical figures we met today used to gather to fight for the rights of Black citizens in their homelands.

Both Aimé Césaire and Alioune Diop were elected right after World War II.

Césaire remained in office from 1945 to 1993, and he was one of France’s longest-serving representatives, députés.

Diop served as a senator for two years, but his biggest contribution was to the arts.

Across the street from the Senate, there’s a little café.

It’s got an off-white awning to protect customers from the rain and the sun, and it has an old-school art deco vibe from the 1930s.

It’s called le Café Tournon — and it’s our final stop of the tour.

Let’s cross the street and take a closer look.

In the 1950s several Black American authors sought to escape segregation in the U.S.

to live and create more freely in France.

Amongst them, seminal authors like Richard Wright and James Baldwin settled in Paris and formed a community here.

Le Café Tournon was their spot.

C’est ici qu’il a écrit son premier livre, Go Tell It on the Mountain.

Chester Himes was an American writer.

He’s not super famous nowadays in the U.S.

but he is still very popular in France.

You might have seen the 1990s movie called A Rage in Harlem, starring Forest Whitaker — that’s adapted from one of his novels.

Anyways, in his autobiography, Chester Himes mentions going to le Café Tournon to borrow money from a guy named “Dick.”

Chester Himes also describes the inside of le Café Tournon.

He says that the walls are painted with scenes from the Luxembourg Gardens and that the paintings are…well, in his opinion, pretty ugly! But you can make up your own mind, because they’re still here, 70 years later!

We’re going to end our tour of le Paris noir here, at le Café Tournon.

Take a seat, enjoy un café crème.

Or, if you’re curious to taste the flavors of Martinique, go check out Bo, a Carribean bar just down the hill.

There you’ll be able to try some accras, fish fritters, or have a tasty rum cocktail.

Thanks so much Kévi for taking us around the neighborhood, we’ve learned so much with you!
