Episode 48: La comédienne de balcon (The Balcony Performer)
Duolingo French Podcast
On October 28, 2020, 26-year-old Marie Benati settled on her couch in her small Paris apartment, and turned on the TV to hear French President Emmanuel Macron address the nation.
Françaises, Français.
Mes chers compatriotes…
He delivered some very, very bad news.
France was going to be fully locked down, confinée, due to Covid-19.
For the second time.
The president had declared that theaters and other cultural institutions weren’t “essential.” But to Marie, theater was the essence of life.
She was an actor, an aspiring director, and now, she didn’t know how long it would be before she would be able to stage or act in a play…again.
Marie switched off the TV and walked over to her window.
She rested her head against the glass, staring absently past her tiny, second-floor balcony.
But as she stared into the street square below her window, a crazy idea popped into her head…

Marie first signed up for a drama club when she was in high school.
She thought it would help her overcome her shyness.
During her first year in drama club, Marie played multiple parts, in a series of short scenes drawn from French classics.
She rehearsed, répétait, every day.
At the end of the year, the drama club staged a show.
It was the first time Marie’s family would see her on stage.
She was nervous.
But when the curtains opened, something clicked for her.
She felt in her element.
After the show, her parents came and congratulated her.
They were very proud.
After graduating high school, Marie wanted to give acting a chance.
But it was nerve-wracking.
She loved performing as a stage actor, une comédienne, but from everything she heard, it looked like a really hard way to make a living.
She wasn’t sure it could be her career.
Marie decided to pursue studies in literature, but she also signed up with a theater troupe.
A director wrote a play for the troupe, and they performed the show 12 times.
On stage, Marie felt empowered.
She could feel the impact their plays had on the audience.
During each performance, she listened to people laugh, cheer, and be moved.
Halfway through her undergrad studies, Marie made up her mind.
It would be a life of hustle and financial uncertainty, but getting to perform in front of a live audience made it all worth it.
So Marie left her university and joined an acting school in Paris.
Marie found an acting job in a small theater, where she could perform in different shows throughout the year.
It allowed her to get paid regularly doing what she loved.
Marie built her career, going to film and theater castings, hoping to pay her rent and land interesting roles.
In France, one of the most important places a theater actor, un comédien de théâtre, can go to get their work noticed is the longstanding Festival d’Avignon, in the south of France.
Marie had never been.
The city of Avignon is known for its bridge, made famous by the children’s song “Sur le pont d’Avignon.” But every year in July, Avignon becomes the French capital of theater, as more than 100,000 festival-goers gather there to attend plays, des pièces de théâtre, from around the world.
That same week, Marie auditioned for another play that would also be staged at Avignon that same summer.
She thought maybe she could do both!
Marie arrived in the medieval city and started going to rehearsals.
Right away, she loved the atmosphere in Avignon.
But Marie also noticed that for small, independent companies like the ones she performed in, the festival was also very draining.
During the day, before each performance, Marie had to promote her plays.
That meant spending hours walking up and down the narrow and crowded streets of Avignon, handing out flyers, and talking up her shows to passersby.
It was exhausting, épuisant.
Every morning, Marie would wonder how many people would show up to that night’s performance.
But to her surprise, most of her shows were pretty crowded.
And for Marie, the most important thing was that she had the opportunity to perform in front of a public every day for an entire month.
It felt amazing.
After performing in Avignon, Marie gained a new interest in staging plays.
She wanted to produce and direct her own play.
The next time she was in Avignon, she was determined to return as an actor and a director.
Two years later, Marie had formed a troupe with former classmates, and she was directing them in her own adaptation of The Misanthrope, a comedy by the famous 17th-century playwright Molière.
They decided to bring their production to Avignon.
Marie was about to set herself a new challenge: directing a play at Avignon! She was so excited that she barely paid attention to the distant news of a virus spreading in Asia…
La Covid-19 s’est désormais propagée dans 24 pays…
But then, in March 2020, everything came to a screeching halt.
Mes chers compatriotes.
Cette épidémie, qui affecte tous les continents…
In March 2020, France announced its first lockdown, and in April, the Festival d’Avignon announced that they were canceling all shows that year.
Marie wouldn’t be able to take her play there in the summer.
It was a huge disappointment.
By the end of October 2020, French theaters had been dark for half a year.
On October 28, President Emmanuel Macron made the announcement that broke Marie’s heart.
The country was going into a second lockdown, which meant all theaters would remain closed.
At that moment, Marie had a revelation.
Since she couldn’t go back to theaters, what if she set up a play right there from her balcony, for people to enjoy from the street? After all, many plays have scenes taking place on a balcony… Like Romeo and Juliet, and Cyrano de Bergerac…
So Marie got her troupe together.
They made a list of scenes that contained a balcony and an outdoor setting.
They picked some comedies by Molière, and also scenes from more contemporary plays.
Then, they began staging them on Marie’s little balcony and on the square below.
They hoped curious passersby would stop and watch.
Marie and her friends played with natural lighting and weather conditions, and picked day or night scenes accordingly.
They used their own costumes and props, and some improvisation.
To their delight, some people in the neighborhood actually stopped and stayed to watch!
As their sets got better, more passersby, des passants, stopped to watch.
They stayed for the entire scene.
And to Marie, after nine long months away from theater, it felt thrilling.
Finally, she was creating live performances for audiences again.
She was doing what she loved.
Some days, the impromptu nature of the shows led to a few…unexpected situations.
In one scene by the classic French playwright Marivaux, Marie played a young woman who tries to escape from her window.
Another time, two actors performed a scene from Albert Camus’s “The Just Assassins” in which they broke into a fight in the middle of the square.
A well-meaning bystander rushed over and tried to separate them…
Little by little, Marie and her troupe got the hang of street performing and the neighborhood grew to expect their short scenes.
Marie named their scenes “Le Balconfiné,” a pun using the words “balcon” and “confiné.”
After a few months of performances, a journalist wrote a piece about them in a local newspaper.
In the days that followed, dozens of people showed up to Marie’s window at every performance.
By the beginning of May 2021, travel restrictions eased and people came from all over the city of Paris to see them perform.
One day, after a performance, a woman came up to Marie and told her she had driven all the way from Normandy!
It wasn’t Avignon, and Marie wasn’t performing in a theater, but she was still living the life she’d always wanted: being an actor, and now, a director… On top of that, she’d even managed to bring some joy to people during the pandemic…without ever leaving her home.

I'm learning French with you guys and I just want to thank you for this beautiful story.
I love how you make us feel like if we would be in the story, with all the background noises, and I have had in my life places that have called me and I couldn't understand why.
And I think this is what is happening to the protagonist of the story with Mont-Saint-Michel.
I find very romantic and beautiful that the protagonist found his family there, in a place that was his first love.
Thank you so much.
I'm looking forward for the next podcast.
