Episode 53: The First Heist - The Rebel Thief, Episode 2
Duolingo French Podcast
Hi all, a quick note before we begin.
This season of The Duolingo French Podcast is serialized.
So if you haven’t heard the previous episode yet, go back and listen to that one first.
Now onto the episode.
It’s March 9th, 1905, the second day of Alexandre Jacob’s trial in the northern French city of Amiens.
In the courtroom, the presiding judge, dressed in his ceremonial robe and cap, sits at a large desk.
He’s ready to start the proceedings for the day.
Silence ! Un peu de silence !
But it quickly becomes clear that Alexandre Jacob has no intention of making things easy for the court.
Monsieur Jacob, levez-vous !
Non, Monsieur.
Retirez votre chapeau au moins.
Pourquoi ?
Leaving his bowler hat firmly on his head, Alexandre refuses to budge from his seat.
On the bench behind him sit his mother, Marie, and his lover, Rose.
They also face trial.
The three accused criminals stare up defiantly at the presiding judge.
The presiding judge rings his bell frantically, struggling to regain control of the room.
It was March 31, 1899 and Rose Roux was in her bedroom in the city of Marseilles.
She was helping her lover, Alexandre Jacob, get ready for his first big robbery.
Rose watched as Alexandre pulled on a disguise his mother Marie had made for him: a police uniform.
Eh bien !
Alors ?
Tu as l’air vraiment sérieux dans ton costume…
Tu trouves ?
Retourne-toi… Hahahaha ! Quel homme !
Rose could tell Alexandre was nervous about this heist: after all, he’d never done something like this before.
He was only 19.
But he’d teamed up with three accomplices he’d met in anarchist circles.
Older guys.
More seasoned.
Rose had watched them plan for weeks.
Alexandre had no experience, but he was ambitious.
He had a lofty goal: to steal from those who profited off the misery of others.
And for this heist, he and his accomplices had found the perfect target: un prêteur sur gages, a pawnbroker.
The owner of Marseilles’s biggest and most notorious pawn shop.
Rose handed Alexandre his belt and his shoes, then looked him up and down.
With his police costume on, his transformation was complete.
But Rose could feel herself start to worry.
What if he made a mistake? What if…he didn’t make it back that night?
Alexandre…
Meanwhile, near Marseilles’s Old Port, a pawnbroker named Manuel Gil was sitting at his desk, waiting for customers.
Everything from his forehead down — his bushy mustache, the gold watch chain at his belt — was hidden behind a huge, unfolded newspaper.
The day had been slow…but Manuel Gil wasn’t worried.
There would always be customers.
Manuel Gil was considering taking a short nap when the door of his shop swung open.
The pawnbroker sighed, slowly lowering his newspaper.
Monsieur Manuel Gil ?
Manuel stared at the four men.
These weren’t customers, he realized.
These were policemen.
With very serious faces.
In a gruff voice, the man who introduced himself as le commissaire, or the police chief, announced that he and his officers were investigating a crime.
A burglary and a quadruple murder.
He told Monsieur Gil that a reliable source had tipped them off: The thieves had brought the stolen jewelry to this very pawnshop, knowing its owner would accept stolen goods.
Manuel Gil froze.
These men were accusing him of being dishonest, malhonnête.
Monsieur Gil braced himself and handed the policemen the keys to his display cases.
On verra ça !
Manuel Gil watched anxiously as the officers began to pull out precious watches and rings from the display cases.
Suddenly, one of the officers held up a watch.
The officers ignored him and continued to rifle through the pawn shop's inventory, setting some pieces aside.
For each item, the youngest officer made a mark in his notebook.
Underneath his police disguise, Alexandre could barely contain his excitement.
Before Manuel Gil knew what was happening, Alexandre and his accomplices had gathered several bags full of valuables to take down to the “police station”, le commissariat, as “evidence.” Of course, they weren't actually going to the police station…
» Ah ! Il avait peur !
That night, Manuel Gil couldn’t sleep a wink.
He kept wondering, were items in his store actually stolen from a murder scene? Could he be going to jail? The following morning, on April 1st, monsieur Gil showed up at the police station as promised.
At that moment, Manuel Gil realized how badly he’d been duped.
There had been no murder investigation.
Those hadn’t even been real policemen.
The only stolen jewelry…was his own.
Back at Rose and Alexandre’s apartment, the mood was very different…
Tu m'impressionnes toujours !
Because of the robbery, Alexandre now had more money than he’d ever had, enough to support the anarchist publications he admired.
He wanted to help educate people about the anarchist movement, and how he thought it could create a better society for the working-poor of France.
The success at monsieur Gil’s pawnshop felt good.
Too good to stop at just one heist…
Rose noticed Alexandre’s giddiness, and she warned him: The police would soon be after him.
He’d better lie low for a while.
Tu as raison, ma belle.
Three months later, Alexandre got off a train in the southern French city of Toulon.
It was a beautiful day, and the scent of lavender filled the air.
So far, he’d been able to evade the police without a hitch.
But he was growing tired of life on the run.
He was thinking of asking Rose to join him there.
But suddenly…
Monsieur ! Oui vous, Monsieur ! Restez où vous êtes !
Alexandre looked up, startled.
Two policemen were walking towards him.
Alexandre whirled around…but there were officers everywhere.
He had nowhere to go.
J’ai regardé devant moi et derrière moi ! Il y avait trop de policiers.
Impossible de partir.
Ils m’ont attrapé par les bras.
C’était fini.
The officers marched Alexandre straight to jail for his role in the pawnshop heist.
He couldn’t bear to be locked up again.
He needed to find a way to escape his tiny cell, sa cellule.
So he came up with a plan.
When the guards were nearby, Alexandre began acting strangely.
Tous…
After some time, Alexandre’s erratic behaviour began to pay off.
The guards became convinced he was losing his mind.
They sent him to see a panel of physicians, who deemed him mentally unstable.
They recommended he be sent to a psychiatric asylum, un asile psychiatrique.
Bien sûr, là-bas, on allait beaucoup me surveiller.
In the fall of 1899, staff at the psychiatric asylum of Aix-en-Provence were given a warning: a new patient was checking in, a dangerous anarchist.
They needed to keep a close eye on him.
But one nurse ignored the warning.
His name was Marius Royère, a southern man with a strong Marseilles accent…and he liked to make up his own mind.
A few days later, Marius was assigned to check on Alexandre during his morning rounds.
As the days went by, the two men began exchanging a few words during these morning visits.
Marius had a hunch that Alexandre might not be crazy at all.
One day, Marius was supervising patients out for their daily walk in the asylum courtyard.
Alexandre approached him.
Little by little, Marius found himself opening up to Alexandre.
He spoke of the long hours and harsh working conditions at the asylum.
Marius told Alexandre he was one of 4 nurses for 700 patients! The two men talked about French society, and the injustices against working people that bothered them both.
Then one day, Marius uttered the forbidden word: “anarchism.”
Marius listened, fascinated.
He’d never met anyone like Alexandre before.
Here was a man who made no excuses for his turbulent past, who lived his life without regrets.
He spoke of his thieving as an act of justice, a vendetta against the rich and powerful.
To his surprise, Marius found himself nodding with approval.
The two friends began discussing a plan to help Alexandre escape.
It wouldn’t be easy: Alexandre knew that he was being closely watched.
So they had to think carefully about every detail.
Finally, one spring night, Alexandre and Marius were ready to put their plan into action.
Marius had been in touch with Rose, and she was helping coordinate the plan from outside.
The accomplices had a rope with them, and some tools.
When they reached the designated spot on the roof, they began sawing a small opening in the ceiling above Alexandre’s cell.
Once they’d cut open a hole large enough for Alexandre to fit through, his accomplices threw down a rope, une corde.
Hearing footsteps approaching, Alexandre grabbed the rope and hauled himself onto the asylum roof.
J’y suis… J’y suis presque.
Outside, Alexandre took a deep breath of fresh air.
His heart was pounding, his senses on high alert.
There was just one thing left for him to do: scale down the wall and make a run for the exit.
Alexandre was free! He was also a wanted man.
But he was no longer an inexperienced youth.
He’d learned that he could fool authorities and escape capture.
And he felt ready…more than ready to embrace the life of a professional thief.
Free in the world, Alexandre felt he could get away with anything.
And he was about to become the most infamous thief in all of France.
