Episode 55: To Catch a Thief - The Rebel Thief, Episode 4
Duolingo French Podcast
Hi all, a quick note before we begin.
This season of the Duolingo French podcast is serialized.
So if you haven’t heard the previous episodes yet, go back and listen to those first.
A heads up that the following episode contains descriptions of a fight scene that includes gunshots.
We’re back in March 1905, in Alexandre Jacob’s trial in the city of Amiens.
The mood in the courtroom is somber.
The man known across France as the country’s most skilled and daring burglar, now faces the most serious charge against him: murder.
Alexandre glances at the rows of benches behind him.
It isn’t just him who’s facing trial.
His mother.
Rose.
Twenty of his men… They’ve all been sitting in prison for over two years, awaiting their day in court.
Alexandre feels a pang of guilt.
Hearing Alexandre’s words, the judge frowns and tells him to sit back down.
There will be order in his courtroom.
But Alexandre isn’t finished.
He wants to do what he can to protect his crew.
At these words, Alexandre goes silent.
He never wanted to use violence.
What went so wrong that he and his men are on trial for…murder? Though Alexandre knows he didn’t fire the deadly shot, he feels he is responsible.
To understand how Alexandre and his men came to break their code of conduct, we need to go back to a rainy spring night about two years earlier, in the sleepy northern town of Abbeville.
As usual, Alexandre hand-picked his crew.
He was joined by a longtime accomplice named Léon Pélissard, a short man with a pointy mustache.
There was also the baby-faced, blue-eyed Félix Bour.
Eh, Félix ! Alors tout est prêt ?
Oui… Bien sûr… Enfin je crois…
Félix was one of the least experienced members of Alexandre’s crew.
This was the first time he’d been sent ahead, as a scout.
Félix showed the other two men the three houses he’d selected as potential targets.
Alexandre discounted two of them: the first seemed occupied.
The other was near a busy street.
Alexandre was glad to see the third house was on a quiet empty street.
Earlier that day, Felix had slid a little slip of paper into the lock.
Now the paper slip was still in place…which meant no one was home.
Alexandre felt confident there’d be no eyewitnesses at this house.
But he still wanted to make sure Félix had followed their second rule when choosing their target, leur cible.
The third house belonged to une rentière, a rich landowner living off of inherited wealth.
Exactly the kind of person that Alexandre wanted to target, and the kind of money he wanted to steal and redistribute to the anarchist cause.
Maintenant, on devait trouver comment entrer.
The three men scoped out the cellar door first, but it was blocked by a heavy metal gate.
Then, Alexandre spotted a window about ten feet off the ground.
When Alexandre explained his plan, Félix asked him if the noise of a window pane breaking would draw people’s attention.
Alexandre told him to relax.
He’d done this dozens of times.
Breaking in through windows was child’s play, un jeu d’enfant.
Still, Félix worried.
Félix watched as Alexandre climbed up to the window sill, grabbed a crowbar from his bag and pried open a shutter.
Finally, with a quick, strong blow, Alexandre broke open a window pane.
Félix was startled by the noise.
Félix and Léon followed Alexandre through the window.
Once the three men were inside, Alexandre instructed Félix to stay near the window as the lookout, le guet.
Meanwhile, Alexandre and Léon began rummaging through the house, in search of valuables.
Alexandre heard Félix whistling — the lookout signal.
He and Léon put down the silverware they were inspecting and went to check on Félix.
When Félix told them about the man he’d seen, Alexandre paused.
Although it was dark, Alexandre clearly saw a woman at her window in the house across the street.
She was spying on them.
This time there was no doubt: They’d been spotted.
They had to get out of there, fast…and they had to leave town before police started looking for them.
Finally Alexandre, Félix, and Léon made it out of Abbeville.
Now they were walking on a dirt country road, enveloped in a thick fog.
For a while, the three men walked in silence, with no clear plan.
Then, Léon spotted something.
A light in the distance.
It looked like a train headlight.
Which meant…there was a train station close by!
Stumbling in the darkness, Alexandre, Félix and Léon followed the direction the train light had gone.
Halfway through the night, they reached Pont-Rémy, a small town with an even tinier train station.
They found the schedule tacked up on a board.
The next train wouldn’t leave until dawn.
They had to wait for four hours.
Alexandre felt they’d avoided the worst.
Still, he checked to make sure he had his gun.
If they did run into the police, he hoped one glimpse of his weapon would scare them off.
Alexandre tried his best to stay awake.
But the day had been long… He could feel his eyelids drooping.
He drifted into a fitful sleep.
When Alexandre opened his eyes again, the sun was about to rise.
Their train would arrive in less than half an hour.
He quickly woke the others.
They looked around, checking for des gendarmes, the national guardsmen who patrol the French countryside.
Everything looked quiet.
Léon took out a flask and passed it to Félix.
À notre départ, Félix !
Oui, au revoir Pont-Rémy ! Bonjour Paris !
While Félix and Léon joked around, Alexandre kept his eyes peeled.
He spotted two gendarmes strolling past the station, but they didn’t seem to be looking for anyone in particular.
When they disappeared around the corner, Alexandre relaxed.
He walked up to the ticket counter.
Suddenly, Alexandre heard someone call out in a sharp voice.
Messieurs ! Oui, vous, messieurs ! Venez ici.
Alexandre looked up, and saw the same two gendarmes walking rapidly towards them, eyeing them suspiciously.
He addressed the agents with a look of innocent confusion.
Bonjour, messieurs.
Oui, oui.
C’est à vous que je parle.
Venez ici.
Nous avons des questions à vous poser.
The two agents signaled for the three men to follow them.
Alexandre complied, but he pretended to be a flustered traveler.
He told the policemen this had to be a misunderstanding, un malentendu.
Léon and Félix followed suit.
Cela doit être un malentendu…
Nous verrons bien…
The policemen led them to a room behind the ticket counter, and began to question them.
Alexandre tried to distract them.
Maybe if he confessed to a smaller crime, like smuggling, la contrebande, the policemen wouldn’t associate them with the attempted burglary of the night before.
Oui bon…
Alexandre tried to remain calm, but his heart was racing.
The gendarme wasn’t buying his act.
Next, he ordered the men to empty their pockets.
Videz vos poches !
Alexandre’s heart sank.
He knew that as soon as the officers saw their weapons, the game would be up.
In a flash, he pulled out his gun.
Laissez-nous passer ! Ou j’ouvre le feu !
Félix couldn’t believe how fast Alexandre had moved.
Félix watched as his friends fought off the two officers.
He frantically pointed his gun from one gendarme to the other, unsure what to do.
Suddenly, Léon was on the floor, an officer pinning him down.
Félix’s hands started shaking violently.
Qu’est-ce que je fais ? Qu'est-ce que je fais ?
A split second later, Félix closed his eyes, and put his finger on the trigger.
Qu’est-ce que j’ai fait !?
The first gendarme let go of Léon, and slumped to the ground.
Félix ! Viens vite ! Cours !
Léon immediately took off running, with Félix on his heels.
But inside the room, the struggle continued.
Alexandre was still locked in combat with the second officer.
Alexandre stared at the smoking gun in his hand.
Then, he ran.
Zut, et zut ! Je ne voulais pas… Je n’ai jamais voulu…
Alexandre had only one thought in his mind: run.
He knew that now, he, Félix, and Léon were each on their own.
Alexandre had made it out…but at what cost? Two officers had been shot.
Soon, the entire police force would be after him.
Still, he kept running as fast and as far as he could.
After a while, he stopped and scanned the open countryside, to see if anyone was coming after him.
C’était sûr, beaucoup de personnes allaient me rechercher.
Alexandre kept running.
And running.
And running.
For hours on end.
The more distance he put between himself and Pont-Rémy, the more confident he felt that no one was coming after him.
At last, he reached a small country road and slowed to a walk.
In the distance, he saw a car approaching…and felt a glimmer of hope.
The car pulled over to the side of the road.
Alexandre approached, hoping for a ride.
But then, he got a closer look at the two men inside…
Back in their Paris apartment, Rose and Marie had no idea what had happened in Pont-Rémy.
Alexandre had left the day before for another routine burglary.
They were expecting him back any minute.
Marie poured some steaming tea into two cups, one for herself, one for Rose.
Police ! Ouvrez immédiatement !
Marie put down her teacup.
She shot a frightened glance at Rose, who took a deep breath and went to open the door.
The police began searching the apartment.
It wasn’t long before they found incriminating items, like Alexandre’s burgling tools, some anarchist pamphlets, and a stash of jewelry.
One of the officers began questioning Marie about the jewelry.
She refused to answer.
But there was one thing she really needed to know…
Marie locked eyes with the officer.
Then, she spoke to him.
The officer stared long and hard at Marie.
Finally, he told her the truth.
Marie shuddered.
Her worst nightmare was coming true.
Alexandre had been arrested — and worse: he was somehow involved in the death of a gendarme.
But at least her son was alive.
And Marie knew as long as he was alive, he’d find a way out.
