Episode 60: Sauver la langue bretonne (Saving the Breton Language)

Duolingo French Podcast

It was 2017 and 28-year-old Maïlys Princé was living in Brittany, la Bretagne, a region in northwestern France.

Brittany has long been known for having a very strong culture, with its own music, a local flag, and a centuries-old language.

But Maïlys wasn’t very interested in her region’s cultural heritage… She was a young mother in search of her calling, sa vocation.

When her daughter turned 3, Maïlys and her husband had to enroll her in pre-school, like all French children.

One of the free local schools nearby had a special twist: they taught children in the old language of Brittany, le breton.

Maïlys was intrigued.

For Maïlys, enrolling her daughter in a Breton school didn’t feel any different than signing her up for music or swim classes.

It was a small experiment, to see if her daughter picked up the language.

Maïlys didn’t know it yet, but the decision would open her eyes to her region’s culture and help her find the calling she’d been missing.

Maïlys Princé was born in Rennes, the biggest city in Brittany.

She grew up there, but a lot of what she knew about her region came from the same history books all French kids study.

The Duchy of Brittany, le duché de Bretagne, was attached to France in 1532, but it’s Celtic in origin, sharing overlaps with places like Ireland, Wales, Scotland or Cornwall.

Its regional language is closer to Cornish or Welsh than to French.

And its traditional music includes French bagpipes, la cornemuse, and the Celtic harp.

Maïlys had been taught that by the end of the 19th century, the proud region had fallen on hard times.

To escape poverty, many in Brittany embraced modernity and adopted a larger “French” identity.

But as a result, most Breton people lost their identity, their culture, and even their language.

In 2012, when Maïlys turned 23, she fell in love with a fellow Breton named Arthur.

A month later, they went on vacation to a small island off the southern coast of Brittany, where Arthur lived when he was a teenager.

The island is called l’île de Groix.

This was Maïlys’ first time on l’île de Groix, but she felt an incredible connection to the land.

The wilderness of the island, its jagged cliffs falling into the Atlantic Ocean and its isolation left her in awe.

For Maïlys, it was love at first sight, un coup de foudre.

Maïlys felt she could have stayed on the island with Arthur forever… But they had to return to their life in Rennes.

A year later, Maïlys and Arthur had a daughter.

Maïlys was excited about this new chapter in her life, yet she felt like something was missing.

She decided to go back to university and study languages that had always intrigued her.

As she ventured on her language learning journey, Maïlys also decided to enroll her daughter in the local Breton language school.

It was called une école Diwan.

“Diwan” in Breton means “to sprout,” or “to grow.” There were a few of these schools scattered across Brittany where a small but committed community was trying to revive the dying Breton language by teaching it to young children.

A few weeks after her daughter had started school, Maïlys noticed that her daughter had already picked up Breton… She was including Breton words in her vocabulary, even outside of school.

Maïlys loved that her daughter was speaking a little bit of Breton and making progress so fast! Then, one day, when she was listening to the radio, Maïlys heard that Diwan schools were in need of Breton teachers.

So this gave her an idea.

Maybe if she learned Breton, she could become a Breton teacher.

That year, Maïlys, her partner, and their daughter went to Maïlys’ beloved île de Groix every chance they got.

They went on weekends and spent every vacation there.

One day, towards the end of their summer vacation, they were at a café by the island’s harbor, when Maïlys’s partner spotted the island’s most passionate Breton speaker.

José sat down at the table with Maïlys and her family.

He was a man in his late fifties, with small rectangular glasses, white hair, and a mischievous smile.

Maïlys peppered José with questions about Groix.

He explained to her that because the island was so isolated, people there spoke a specific Breton dialect, le breton de Groix.

Then, José told Maïlys that these Breton words and expressions that were unique to Groix would soon disappear.

On the island, only two people spoke the Breton dialect from Groix.

And José was one of them.

Hearing this, Maïlys felt something stir inside of her.

Now, Maïlys was eager for her vacation to be over so she could begin her intensive course in Breton.

She hoped that by learning Breton, she would be able to help José preserve his local Breton dialect.

For someone who hadn’t been very interested in her Breton roots as a child, Maïlys felt she had come a long way.

Maïlys came back from her vacation, and started intensive Breton lessons.

Every week, she took 35 hours of classes.

At night, she studied hard.

At home, she spoke Breton to her daughter.

And once a month she took an additional class to learn the dialect of l‘île de Groix.

Maïlys studied hard and within a year, she had become good enough to teach Breton to beginners, des débutants.

And she was offered a class she couldn’t refuse.

Maïlys was happy to visit her beloved île de Groix even more often.

And she also loved that she could spend some time with her friend, José.

During these conversations, José revealed the real story of how Breton had started to disappear during the 20th century.

Although people from Brittany had embraced French as a means of escaping poverty and isolation, it hadn’t always been voluntary.

At the time, for many children in Brittany, Breton was the native language, but they were forbidden from speaking it at school.

They had to learn French, and to enforce this policy, the school teachers, les instituteurs, set up a system to punish Breton speakers through public shaming.

They used a wooden clog, un sabot en bois, tied to a thick string.

French kids who had been caught speaking Breton were punished, punis.

All day, they had to wear the wooden clog on a string around their necks.

The French teachers would only remove the clog if the child gave up the names of and denounced other Breton-speaking kids.

After hearing José recount Brittany's troubled history, Maïlys realized what she wanted to do.

She didn’t just want to teach Breton; she wanted to join the growing number of locals who were trying to revive the Breton language and culture as a whole.

On l'île de Groix, like in the rest of Brittany, there was a real enthusiasm for the Breton language.

A few people on the island were eager to learn Breton.

Many of them had known a grandparent who had spoken the language and they were trying to reclaim their roots.

These were Maïlys’s students.

After teaching course after course, Maïlys became dedicated to preserving the language and culture of Brittany.

So when Maïlys taught beginner classes on the island, she always invited José to visit.

He came and taught Maïlys and her students words and turns of phrase specific to Groix.

For forty years, he had been collecting everything he could to keep the specific dialect spoken on his island alive.

Over time, and with José's help, Maïlys became more and more fluent in the Breton dialect from Groix.

And so one day, José showed her a thick folder, filled with scribbled sheets of paper organized in colorful files.

José explained that this folder contained decades of research.

The files dated back to the 1960s, when a linguist had come to Groix to study the island’s last generation of Breton speakers.

A linguist had enregistré, recorded, hours and hours of tape in breton de Groix.

José felt that these recordings were a local treasure, and so he wanted to make them available to the public.

For years, he transcribed, il transcrivait, and translated them into Breton and into French.

He told Maïlys this project was his life’s work.

But he was far from done…

A few months later, in February 2020, José suddenly passed away.

Maïlys was devastated.

For several weeks, Maïlys couldn’t bear to study Breton or look at the documents José had given her.

But one night, after she had put her daughter to bed, Maïlys sat down at her desk, took a deep breath, and opened José’s folder.

She knew what she wanted to do.

Today, Maïlys hopes to digitize the transcriptions and the translations and put them on the internet, accessible to anyone.

Through Breton, Maïlys has found an identity, a career, and a mission.

She wants to do her part to help keep the island’s dialect alive for generations to come.
