Episode 88: Une chanson révolutionnaire (A Song of Revolution) - Revisited
Duolingo French Podcast
Bonjour dear listeners!
In many countries around the world, March is Women’s History Month.
To mark the occasion, the Duolingo French Podcast is revisiting some of our favorite stories from women trailblazers across the francophone world.
Today, we’ll hear an episode from September 2020, featuring Emel Mathlouthi, a singer-songwriter from Tunisia.
As an artist, Emel aspired to bring a spirit of freedom to her country through her music.
What she didn’t expect was to find herself seizing the moment, center stage, in the middle of a revolution.
Keep listening to hear her fascinating story.
And stay tuned at the end for an update from Emel.
Now, onto the episode.
It was the summer of 2007, and Emel Mathlouthi was a 25 year-old musician living in Tunisia.
One day, while attending a festival in the country’s capital, Tunis, a friend approached Emel.
That night, Emel read the poem.
It was written in Arabic, and the first line struck her.
“We are free and unafraid.” To be free and unafraid, that’s what Emel aspired to.
That’s why she sang.
But in Tunisia, in 2007, this was far from reality.
Emel wanted to denounce the dictatorship and the country’s inequality with her music.
But she knew that openly criticizing President Ben Ali’s regime was a serious act with serious consequences.
So Emel decided to set the poem to music.
The song “Kelmti Horra” was born.
It meant “My words are free”, in Arabic.
And it was about to take a life of its own.
Bienvenue and welcome to the Duolingo French Podcast.

Every episode, we bring you fascinating true stories to help you improve your French listening and gain new perspectives on the world.
Growing up, Emel equated music with freedom.
Her parents had a lot of vinyls and played music every night, especially classical Tunisian songs.
These old-fashioned songs offered Emel a window into a different world.
As a teenager, Emel’s music tastes diversified and she discovered folk and rock from the U.S., listening to Janis Joplin and Led Zeppelin, but also metal and electro music.
But outside of music, Emel’s world was grim.
Her generation had only known life under dictatorship, and living conditions were harsh.
The government was the main employer and many Tunisians were unemployed, au chômage.
Their families struggled to make ends meet.
On paper, Tunisia was a democracy.
But President Ben Ali kept getting reelected, impossibly, with 90% of the vote.
And journalists reporting on corruption and election fraud were harassed and imprisoned.
No one could talk freely.
Still, Emel tried.
In 2006, she performed at a state-owned venue.
The two men on the phone wanted to know who Emel was and who wrote the lyrics to her songs.
Then, they told her that they were the ones with the power to decide if she should exist as an artist.
They warned her not to speak badly about Tunisia.
Emel refused to be silenced.
So, Emel and her friends set up events in makeshift underground venues: someone’s apartment, a room in an arts center… For the most part, Emel sang about hope, about freedom of expression.
Her ethereal voice worked well in these small spaces.
But she longed to take her songs to a bigger stage.
That summer of 2007, when Emel was setting “Kelmti Horra” to music, she participated in an international singing contest for a French radio station… and won second place! Her prize was an invitation to sing at a huge concert in Paris.
There’d be tens of thousands of people there.
It was a big deal.
The concert was a celebration of France’s own independence day: le 14 juillet, or Bastille day.
And the concert would take place on the famous square itself: Place de la Bastille.
To Emel, the symbolism was perfect.
Singing that song for the first time in such a public setting was bold.
Maybe even reckless.
Emel knew it could get her into big trouble in Tunisia.
A few lines in particular.
Quote: “Don't forget the price of bread, don't forget the cause of our misery, he who betrayed us in our time of need.”
As Emel prepared to take the stage, she felt butterflies in her stomach.
She had le trac, stage fright.
But nothing was going to stop her from sharing her song with the world.
In Paris, Emel faced an audience of over 50,000 people.
After stepping on the stage, she asked the audience to, quote, “sing with her in the name of freedom of expression.” After just a few notes, the public was mesmerized.
Emel had known that she was taking a big risk by singing “Kelmti Horra” in public and dedicating the song to all oppressed people.
So she wasn’t surprised when, after her performance ended up on Youtube, the Tunisian government banned the song.
But then, they also started a smear campaign against Emel and her music.
Ma chanson « Kelmti Horra » a été officiellement interdite.
Emel’s music was banned from appearing on radio, television, and at festivals.
Life in her home country became tricky.
Strangers yelled at her in the street.
But for her, singing her truth remained a necessity.
Emel moved to Paris, but she continued singing about the situation back home.
And she didn’t give up the fight.
She kept going back to Tunisia to see family and keep the message of freedom alive.
She had to hide from the government to perform, so she relied on secret concerts and word of mouth.
In 2009, on one of her trips back to Tunisia, Emel performed at an underground concert hall in Tunis.
As she started to sing “Kelmti Horra”, something incredible happened…
People who’d never seen her perform knew the song by heart.
Emel was stunned and energized.
After that, each time she went back to her home country, Emel noticed that on the street, more and more Tunisians dared to voice their discontent with the government.
In December 2010, Emel traveled to the south of Tunisia for another underground concert.
The day of her performance, she heard about a young street vendor called Mohamed Bouazizi.
Unable to support his own family and under constant harassment by local officials, Bouazizi killed himself in an act of protest.
He set himself on fire.
When she heard about his death, Emel decided to dedicate her concert to his memory.
In the south, where many Tunisians live in extreme poverty, people started to protest.
Emel didn’t expect it to last.
Protests in the south never reached the capital.
But when she got to Tunis, Emel realized that this time, it may be different.
Emel reacted to the protests in the best way she knew how.
She wrote music, and worked intensely on her first album.
Emel couldn’t believe street protests in Tunisia were happening in her lifetime, de son vivant.
So she kept a close eye on the situation on the ground.
Protests were happening daily, all over the country, and she decided to join a large march in Tunis in January.
As she was sitting among other demonstrators on the central avenue of Tunis, one of the local activists spotted Emel and asked her to sing for everyone at the protest.
A capella.
Amongst the sea of protesters, Emel chose to sing the song dear to her heart… “Kelmti Horra”.
It was an incredible moment for Emel — and a turning point for her country.
Soon afterwards, President Ben Ali fled Tunisia.
The protests had turned into a true revolution.
Tunisians called it the Jasmine Revolution, la Révolution du Jasmin.
The Jasmine Revolution soon reverberated throughout the middle east, and inspired other Arab countries to start their own protests in what would later be known as the Arab Spring.
Emel lived that hope front and center.
A video of her singing softly and holding that candle was widely shared on news broadcasts and Youtube.
The song reached millions of people, all over the world.
“Kelmti Horra” became the anthem not just of the Jasmine Revolution but also the Arab Spring.
In the years since those momentous protests, Arab countries have experienced different degrees of change.
Emel hopes that her country will only continue to grow more and more democratic.
In December 2015, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to a group of four Tunisian associations that have helped move the country towards a more equal and just society.
And Emel got an invitation she couldn’t refuse.
That year, she took the stage to perform at the awards ceremony in Oslo.
« I am the voice of those who do not give up.
I am free and my word is free. »
Emel is a singer-songwriter currently living in New York.
This is where our original episode ends, but Emel recently shared some updates with us.
She left a message via WhatsApp, so you may notice her French is different from the original audio recording:
Thank you so much, Emel, for this update! Happy ten-year anniversary to you and to Kelmti Horra! We're excited to hear that you released a vinyl album for the occasion, and we can’t wait to listen to this special edition celebrating freedom.
