Episode 92: Rêves d’une karateka (Karate Dreams) - Revisited

Duolingo French Podcast

Bonjour dear listeners! In many countries around the world, March is Women’s History Month.

To mark the occasion, the Duolingo French Podcast is revisiting some of our favorite stories from women trailblazers across the francophone world.

Today, we’ll hear an episode from June 2020 featuring a karate student from Montreal.

Her name is Valérie Desroches.

Valérie started practicing karate as a child.

She loved the sport, but she found herself up against many barriers while learning the complex routines.

When she learned she had Asperger’s syndrome, Valérie’s outlook on her karate practice changed.

Keep listening to find out how.

And stay tuned at the end for an update from Valérie.

Now, onto the episode.

“Punch first, kick second.

Punch first, kick second.” The words play over and over in 35-year-old Valérie Desroches’ head, as she practices karate at her gym.

Je dois beaucoup me concentrer.

Back when she was a child, Valérie didn’t understand why some moves were so hard for her to master.

Growing up in Montreal, it seemed like things came much more easily to the other kids at her karate school.

Quelque chose qui cloche.

“There’s something wrong with me.” Valérie had that nagging feeling for a very long time.

But she couldn’t put her finger on what, exactly, was wrong.

What she did know, though, was that she loved karate, and that she wanted to spar in competitions…and win.

Her karate teachers discouraged Valérie from sparring in competitions, faire des combats.

They told her it would be too hard.

They wouldn’t even let her train for it.

But Valérie has never been the kind to give up.

She realized very early on that if she wanted to compete, she would have to keep going, on her own.

Bienvenue and welcome to the Duolingo French Podcast.

I’m your host, Ngofeen Mputubwele.

Every episode, we bring you fascinating true stories to help you improve your French listening and gain new perspectives on the world.

A quick word about Canadian French: You may notice that some words ending in certain vowel sounds, like the “e-u-x” in “veux” and “deux,” have an added “r” sound at the end, sounding more like “veu” and “deu.” You may also notice that words ending in an “r” sound, like “professeur,” sound a little more stretched out, “profess-ay-ure.”

Valérie remembers feeling out of sync with the people around her from very early on.

At school, during recess, other kids would be playing in the schoolyard.

Valérie, on the other hand, had a different idea of fun.

That’s right.

Ten-year-old Valérie would learn entire pages of the dictionary.

By heart.

For fun.

She was super smart.

But socially, she could be painfully awkward.

Like one time when she was playing with a little girl at the pool.

Valérie had laughed not because she thought that the little girl’s grandmother’s death was funny.

She laughed because she was happy to be talking with a friend.

Happy because the little girl trusted her.

When Valérie realized that she’d laughed at the wrong thing, she felt terrible.

Unsurprisingly, Valérie wasn’t a big fan of group sports.

But one day, she and her mom went to pick up her older brother at his karate class.

She watched the rows of kids perform their katas, their training sequences, in unison, synchronized yet separate.

Valérie was hooked.

Je me suis dit : « Je veux essayer ça. »

So Valérie signed up.

Her teenage brother, embarrassed at having his kid sister tag along with him to practice, quit soon afterwards.

But Valérie didn’t care.

Her whole life, Valérie had found crowded, noisy environments, like shopping malls or street fairs, very hard to handle.

They made her tired and anxious.

At karate practice, the muted, padded sounds of bare feet on the tatami mat provided a welcome sense of calm.

It allowed her to focus on her own inner voice.

Valerie proudly put the trophy in her room, but before long, her newfound confidence hit a roadblock.

One day, one of the teachers at her karate club took her aside.

In a stern voice, she told Valérie she didn’t need to come to practice so often.

At first, Valérie was confused.

She tried to explain that she wanted to come to practice as often as possible.

But then she realized the teacher wasn’t giving her a choice.

It was an order.

Valérie didn’t want to give up on karate, so she agreed to only come to practice twice a week.

But she had less time to learn the moves, and as practices started getting more complex, they became harder to follow.

Then one day, when Valérie was 17, things came to a head.

Quitting karate was hard for Valérie.

She missed it.

And it came during a difficult period of her life.

In her late teens and early twenties, she felt increasingly isolated and out of sync with the people around her.

She felt misunderstood.

She spoke with several doctors about her feelings of anxiety and isolation.

None of them had answers.

Valérie struggled on like this until college, when she started training to become a special ed teacher.

One day, in a psychology course, her professor put on a video for the class.

It was about people on the autism spectrum.

Moved by this discovery, Valérie consulted with a neuropsychologist.

After running several tests, he confirmed what Valérie suspected: she had Asperger syndrome, a form of autism.

At first, having this diagnosis, this new definition of herself, felt strange.

But soon, Valérie felt an immense relief.

Quand j’ai compris ça, je me suis sentie mieux.

Valérie’s newfound knowledge gave her the courage to make a big decision: she wanted to take up karate again.

And this time, she was determined to do all the things she had been told she couldn’t do.

She would train as often as she wanted.

And she would compete.

Valérie practiced until she felt ready to compete in Quebec’s Para Karate competition, a tournament for people with disabilities.

But when she tried to sign up, she got bad news.

Though Valérie was on the autism spectrum, and had difficulty with coordination, they said her IQ was too high for her to qualify.

Valérie didn’t give up.

She made a resolution: if she couldn’t participate in the Para-Karate competitions, she would train as long and as hard as she needed to qualify for regional competitions known in Quebec as combats d’élite, elite-level championships.

Valérie went back to her old karate club.

She wanted to improve, améliorer, her technique.

The teachers for adults were different than the ones she’d had as a teen.

Valérie told them upfront about her diagnosis, and also about her ambition to compete.

But just like her old teachers, they were unsupportive.

Ils m’ignoraient.

Valérie couldn’t understand why the teachers were being so unsupportive.

Still, she didn’t give up.

Now, she was a teacher herself, in special ed, and she knew a good teacher could make a big difference.

She decided to take private lessons, des cours privés.

After eight months of private classes and weight training, Valérie felt ready to sign up for local competitions, even without her club’s support.

In her first few tournaments, she did not do well, but what mattered was being there.

One day, when Valérie was competing alone at a tournament in New Brunswick, she noticed a man watching her from the sidelines.

After she lost a fight, he came towards her and introduced himself.

For the first time in her life, someone had sought her out because of her karate talent.

The next time Valérie faced off against an opponent, François coached her from the sidelines.

She immediately liked his style.

After that, Valérie joined François’ gym, and began training there every day after work.

Je peux vraiment me concentrer.

Valérie kept up her training with François, preparing for a tournament known as la Coupe Québec.

It’s a small province-level tournament, but for her, it was a big step.

In October 2019, after training for nearly two years, Valérie felt ready.

During her years of training, Valérie had learned what adjustments she needed to make in order to be in good shape for a fight.

She needed to be well-fed and well-rested.

But most of all, she needed to avoid noisy environments.

Once her turn came on the mat, Valérie was able to tune out all the ambient noise.

Her focus was laser sharp.

Move by move, Valérie deflected all of her opponent’s attacks.

All her years of preparation, of training, were paying off.

She soared through her first fight, then her second one.

For a second, Valérie couldn’t believe it.

She had won! She’d won gold! She stared at François.

Then she broke into a huge, excited grin.

Some of the trainers from Valérie’s old karate club were at the tournament.

If they were surprised or impressed by her win, they didn’t show it.

But Valérie no longer cared about their validation.

She has since come to see their past attitude for what it was: discrimination.

After the competition, Valérie resolved to bring the lessons from her victory into her work as a special ed teacher.

Today, when she’s with her students, she encourages them in the way she wishes her old karate teachers had done with her.

Valérie Desroches lives in Montréal, Quebec.

This is where our original episode ends, but a lot has happened for Valérie since then! We recently reached out to her via email and learned some exciting news.

In July 2022, she won the gold in her category at the para-karate World Championship!

Valérie continues to train with François Persico, but her life outside of karate has been keeping her busy.

She still works as a Special Education teacher, and she also started a degree in psychology.

She’s interested in neuropsychology and autism, and hopes to apply to a PhD program in the field.
