Episode 93: La reine du codage (The Coding Queen) - Revisited

Duolingo French Podcast

Bonjour dear listeners!

In many countries around the world, March is Women’s History Month.

To mark the occasion, the Duolingo French Podcast is revisiting some of our favorite stories from women trailblazers across the francophone world.

Today, we’ll feature an episode from September 2021 about Matina Razafimahefa, a university student who grew up on the 4th-largest island in the world: Madagascar.

Matina knew that in Madagascar, education is widely inaccessible, and she felt lucky to have the chance to go to college.

But she couldn’t shake off her frustration about the fact that so many kids in her country didn’t have the same opportunities.

So at 19, she took action… Listen to find out how.

And stay tuned for an update from Matina at the end.

Now, onto the episode!

It was November 2017 and 19-year-old Matina Razafimahefa was in her second year of university in Paris.

Though she was studying in France, Matina is actually Malagasy, or Malgache, which is what people from the island of Madagascar are called.

And all her life, Matina had always loved school.

But Matina had a problem.

She wasn’t just a student.

She was also a budding entrepreneur.

And she had her own personal business project: creating the first-ever online coding school in Madagascar.

It was her dream to help young Malagasy students find jobs in tech.

But over time, Matina became overwhelmed by the workload.

So one night, in her bedroom in Paris, Matina set aside her homework.

She realized she had a decision to make.

Either she had to put her dream of building a school on hold, or she had to drop out of the prestigious university she’d worked so hard to get into.

Bienvenue and welcome to the Duolingo French Podcast.

Every episode, we bring you fascinating true stories to help you improve your French listening and gain new perspectives on the world.

Matina was born in 1998 in the West African country Ivory Coast.

But her parents moved back to their home country, Madagascar, when she was two.

Madagascar is an island off the coast of East Africa, about twice the size of California.

It’s a former French colony, but it gained its independence in 1960.

French is still an official language there, and Matina attended a private French school.

French private schools in Madagascar were expensive, and could only be afforded by wealthier families, like Matina's.

Matina lived a sheltered childhood.

But one morning, she saw something that changed her life forever.

Matina was in her mother’s car on her way to school, and she looked through the car window.

On the side of the road, she noticed a group of children her age.

They were dressed in rags…begging.

Matina was only a young child, but she knew something was wrong.

Why didn’t those children have the same clothes as she did? Why couldn’t they go to school the way she did? It made her confused and upset.

Madagascar is the tenth poorest country in the world, and access to education is terribly unequal.

Even public schools have fees that make them inaccessible to many lower-income families.

According to UNICEF, 20% of children in Madagascar are never sent to school.

Some NGOs place that figure even higher.

When Matina turned 11, her parents packed up the whole family and moved to Nantes, in France.

Matina initially attended a private middle school.

But when she turned 15, she enrolled in the local public high school.

Matina had gone to private schools since she was a kid.

So for her, going to public school was a new experience.

On that first day, Matina remembered the children she had seen through the car window in Madagascar.

They had been begging in the streets, unable to attend school.

Now, here in a place where education was free, a feeling of injustice hit Matina very hard.

Throughout the school day, Matina thought long and hard about what she could do to change things.

Then she had an idea: offering training, une formation, to underserved students.

When she came back from school, Matina went straight to see her mother.

Matina’s mom looked at her in surprise.

Her 15-year-old daughter wanted to do what?

Matina got her high school diploma and enrolled at la Sorbonne in Paris, one of the most well-known universities in Europe.

She decided to study political science.

She thought this might be the best way to learn how to create a school in Madagascar.

At the end of Matina’s first year in college, her church hosted a “young Protestant innovators” conference in London.

Matina decided to go.

One of the guest speakers was a young Swedish woman, who created an app that connects refugees and migrants, des migrants, to locals in Nordic countries.

When Matina heard this woman talk about her experience, something clicked into place.

Seeing a young woman, like herself, use tech to change people's lives for the better made Matina realize that she needed to start working on her own project.

Even if that meant she had to start from scratch, partir de zéro.

Matina was only 19 when she decided to be a full-time entrepreneur and a full-time student.

She felt confident she would find the resources she needed to develop a free school in Madagascar.

She just needed to convince a lot of people to trust her.

Starting with her mom.

As her second year of college started, Matina signed up for something called Startup Weekend in Paris.

The goal of the event was to support Malagasy entrepreneurship and innovation in France.

It worked a bit like a startup incubator: aspiring entrepreneurs had 48 hours to meet with mentors, make connections and get advice to flesh out their ideas.

On the first day of the event, Matina attended a presentation by one of the conference organizers.

He explained that throughout the world, there was a growing need for web developers.

The idea was simple, and it felt manageable.

But it also served a real purpose.

As Matina talked through her ideas with people, she developed a business model.

She wanted the school to be affordable to anyone while teaching students a high-demand skill: coding.

Her ultimate goal was to be able to help lift Malagasy youth out of poverty and give them access to an affordable education.

The tech sector in Madagascar is still very young, but the island is already home to several telecom groups.

The CEO of one of them, the Axian Group, happened to be at the Paris Startup Weekend.

So Matina pitched her idea to him…and he was impressed.

He told Matina that if she launched her school and trained talented web developers, he’d be interested in hiring them.

Quand ce chef d’entreprise m’a dit ça, mon projet est devenu réel.

Je me suis dit : « C’est possible ! ».

Matina came up with a name for her company: Sayna, which means “intelligence” in Malagasy.

She'd saved 500 euros from odd jobs, handing out flyers and working as a temp secretary.

But that wasn't nearly enough.

So she decided to start a crowdfunding campaign, une campagne de financement participatif.

By January 2018, Matina had raised 5,000 euros: enough to buy computers, rent a classroom in Madagascar’s capital city, and cover the cost of a 3-month training program for a dozen students.

It was the seed money she needed to get started.

Matina was doing everything on her own, all while juggling her life as a full-time student! But she knew that to really make her school a success, she needed to devote all her attention to her startup.

So she made a big decision.

Matina dropped out of her second year at la Sorbonne and took a plane to Antananarivo, Madagascar’s capital city.

There she rented a little place to live, and she got to work.

First, she found a small classroom space and bought some computers.

Then she placed an ad online for a coding teacher, un professeur de codage informatique.

After that, all that was left was to recruit the students.

But Matina worried she might have a credibility problem.

After all, this was a new, unknown school, launched by a 19-year-old.

She decided to host an open house to reach prospective students.

On the day of the open house, Matina was very stressed.

What if no one showed up?

At last, the prospective students showed up.

After the open house, 12 students enrolled in the 3-month program.

Exactly the number of students Matina had wanted for Sayna’s very first semester.

They came from a variety of backgrounds, and many of them came from very poor families.

When this student started the training program, Matina was touched by Fetra’s story.

She could see that he really wanted to succeed.

For this first group of students, the program was entirely free.

During three months, students took the training course with the instructor, Matina, and Matina’s mother, who came from France to help the team.

Matina met with many local CEOs to make sure each of the 12 students in Sayna’s first graduating class got a job when they completed the program.

Nearly all of them did.

At the end of the program, Fetra, the student who’d showed up with 1.50 euros in his pocket, signed a permanent contract at Axian Group.

Matina Razafimahefa is an entrepreneur and educator living between Antananarivo, Madagascar, and Paris, France.

This is where our original episode ends, but we recently got in touch with Matina and she wanted to share an update for you listeners, or auditeurs.

She left a message via Whatsapp, so you may notice her French is different from the original audio recording:

Bonjour chers auditeurs.

Matina says that her training program, Sayna, became the first Malagasy start up to raise international venture capital.

Sayna also launched new versions of its platform to improve the experience for the learners, les apprenants.

They received a lot of positive feedback, or retours.

Matina is hopeful that with the new funding and the improvements to Sayna’s platform, more and more people in Madagascar and elsewhere in Africa will be able to learn coding skills and secure new job opportunities.

We wish you a beautiful day too, Matina, and best of luck with Sayna!
